Long Cranking Starts

Looks like I need to get to the dealer. After the car is warmed up, if I turn it off and let it sit for 30+mins it now takes FOREVER to start. Not a battery issue, it cranks and cranks, just like the fuel in the lines evaporates out? When the engine is hot and has been sitting, it will crank an entire starter cycle (about 5 seconds) and not start. Will start right up on the second try though. If I start it cold, it cranks right up every time.

Anyone else run into this? I'm still in the break in period, and am wanting to avoid the dealer until I hit 1500 (I'll get oil changed at the same time, and don't want to risk a tech taking my car on a full throttle test ride to diagnose the starting issue). It's not a huge inconvenience at this point, just embarrassing when it happens. Think I'll hurt the car by waiting? I'm at 800 miles...

sounds like a bum fuel pump. The dealer will check the fuel pressure and diagnose from there. Any check engine lights?

Seems like a common, uncommon to Z28, scenario. Take it in now. Should not be major. The engine is ready for anything by 800 miles. Even if you feel right about going easy for longer, no sense in waiting. Replicate the problem for the dealer and there should be no leisure tech drives. Dealer time is a annoyance, agreed, but this car should be firing up. It is not as if the car is misfiring or stalling in other scenarios, correct?

Car runs perfectly once started (no misfires or anything similar), there has always been slight lope and shake at idle, but I understand that's normal. The startup issue began as a slightly longer crank time but has now maxed out the starter cycle (again only when the engine is hot and sits for a while). No CEL lights either. Calling the dealer today...

try doing a battery reset.

same symptom as you describe after flashing with HP Tuners.
would be fixed after disconnecting the ground terminal for 1min.
I assume your car has not been tuned with HP tuners but doesn't hurt to try.

Good luck!

Do not tune your car, it will void the warranty. Take it to the dealer.

Try this...just crank for a couple revolutions and turn the key to off...then start and see if it immediately fires. If so...an injector may be the culprit.

Hello Austindrvr,

I have taken some time to review this thread in great detail and I see you are receiving some advice from other forum members. However, I see you were planning on calling the dealership yesterday to bring your startup concern to their attention. If you would like us to provide an additional layer of support while your vehicle is being diagnosed and serviced, please send us a private message. Also, make sure to include your VIN, mileage, full contact information and involved dealership in your message as well. We hope to hear from you!

just to clarify,

I did not say tune the car.
I said I had the same symptoms after tuning my car with HP tuners.
the way I fixed it, and commonly known among HP tuner users is to do a battery reset. which involves disconnecting the ground cable from the battery for 1 min.
no warranty will be denied by momentarily disconnecting a battery cable.

They are the real deal. Look at their profile and post count. I am not a moderator but have worked with them in the past.
