Long Tube Question

SMG is having a good Black Friday sale on TSP Long tubes.. Only 549 which is a damn good price. I was told they are 2" but I feel people said go 1 7/8. Just wanted to confirm what most people are running? Also if I got that route is there anything else I should buy??? If I recall the stock plug wires may not have clearance with the 2'. If needed any part numbers would be great I believe they come with free heat socks

Go with the 2" option if you don't already have headers. They won't hurt you now, and will make a little more power if you ever start getting into the 700-800+rwhp range.

What about clearance with the plug wires? Will I need to go aftermarket plug wires with 2'?

Going to a higher temp wire is recommended. The larger amount of heat will at some point cause an issue.

We usually recmomend the 2" on the ZL1s. They fit just fine on the 5th gen you might have to ding one of the pipes for a little clearance here or there but nothing crazy. Aftermarket wires are not needed but if you do decide to grab a set we always recommend a set of boot protectors.

Definitely go 2". I used the stock wires, no problems. I did have to dent one primary to clear the steering shaft. Super easy to do. If you are installing yourself, put the header in, mark the area of the tube next to the steering shaft, pull it back out, dent it with a mini sledge and a big deep well impact socket. Easy. You need a good 1/2 to 3/4" clearance.

Im curious if I have to "ding" a pipe because it might make contact. How much of a "ding" do I have to make when the engine torques and twists?

Thats why I when with 1 7/8 to prevent "dinging" and getting false knock from rubbing/contact .

I have the American Racing Headers in 2 inch they fit perfect and required no dinging or modifying for clearance.

There is about 100 pages on "custom fitting" headers. Some move the motor, some "ding" the pipe, some send the headers back. Most fit, but some(all brands) need to be modified a tad. Mine was good if I was going straight but soon as I made a left turn(?) it would hit the steering shaft. It's not a big deal even some want to make it one. A minimal dent works, 1/4 to 3/4". It's not like it has to be crushed to half the diameter of the pipe.

I still have the belly pan installed on my car. Just needed to notch it a little at the collector.

I have installed Kooks 1-7/8 headers on multiple 5th Gens with no clearance issues. And I have added a factory Z28 belly pan and have not experienced any header clearance problems.

Yep just had to notch mine out so belly pan fit flush with bottom of the car. Thats crazy how you didn't need to do the same thing hmm?
