After Market Mass Airflow Sensors.....true or BS

Saw this over on ebay:

"Product Code:JET-69143
Manufacturer:JET Performance

These mass airflow sensors flow 41 percent more airflow then stock. The Powr-Flo sensors are designed to improve horsepower and increase gas mileage. They are compatible with factory electronics and stock vehicles, as well as modified vehicles including, but not limited to: Performance tuning (chips, modules, etc.), exhaust modifications (cat-back, headers, etc.), cold air intakes, and ignition systems."

Seems a little to good to be true and haven't seen anyone discussing them.

fact or crap?

I would recommend using the factory sensor and just tuning your car.
In my opinion these can be a waste of money.

Typically your MAF can support up to a certain HP limit. I would say unless you are making GOBS of HP, your fine with the stock MAF and tuning ...

I think a lot of these MAFs would also trick the computer into thinking it should add more timing and not always accruately represent true operating conditions. I'm with about everyone else - stay with the OEM one and tune unless you're making huge power and the OEM MAF is a restriction.

Back in the day these were useful for the 5.0 Mustang guys. The MAF on those cars was restrictive and to make big power you needed a larger one. Also they allowed a way to "trick" a stock tuned system to accept larger fuel injectors. Mind you this was before retuning the computer was common. On my 94 GT I picked up over 60HP on a Pro-M 77 MAF with a heavy modded 5.0 with a Vortech S/C.

On these cars it looks like a non-issue to date. <edit><--- AKA NOT NEEDED </edit>

Yup. I think, more recently, they tell the PCM it is actually cooler outside so it will add timing to make more power. Personally, I don't like the sensors to lie to the PCM, so I'd rather consider tuning for an optimal AF ratio than this. However, if it's a restriction, that's a different story, IMVHO.

Everyone I've heard about that changed their MAF on the LS1 (on the LS1Tech Forums) had nothing but serious problems afterwards until the stock MAF was put back in. Juss sayin'.

From a tuners standpoint, I have to say that aftermarket MAF's are a complete waste of your money. I've seen the calibrations in them vary widely and the stock MAF sensor will flow plenty of air and there is no need for a larger one.
