Suggestion on Tire Pyrometer?

Anyone have a suggestion on a make/model of a tire pyrometer? Google search comes up with a lot of different ones and I do not have experience with any.

Try one of these.

The one for 144.00 works just fine and is priced well. The others have more cool features but is not necessary for logging tire temps.

Here is a decent article on the subject of tire reading, although some of the diagnosis information is contradicting or not correct for all chassis set ups.

Ok cool, I was looking at the one for $144 but wasn't sure if there is any specific from on brand to the next. Obviously I'm not looking for fancy, just need to take temp measurements.

You can use a basic pyrometer from harbor freight and put $100 in your mod fund for my aero and lowering work.

The key is getting and keeping good data. You need to track weather, track, setup information, tire pressures and temps to make the information usefaul/

Your going to send people off the deep end suggesting an infrared pyrometer!

If you could use an IR temp probe for other stuff, could get one with a k-type connector and buy a k-type connector pin probe separately. Cost more, but multi-use.

I have a fluke 566 with the food safe probe and bought a long acre tire probe recently. Works well, but can get pricey.

If I use a ruler that is out of scale to measure ride height and consistently use the same screwed up tool my measurement data will be useful to me. What we are looking for is the temperature spread across the tire.

What people would that be? There are not many who are interested in this super easy, fantastic way to see how thier set up is working. Out of all these posts asking about tire pressure this, tire pressure that, only Baylor and a couple of others take it to the next level.

I'd spend a touch more for a probe type.

It will be much more accurate and you can advance with it by taking more temps across the tire face if you choose to. An IR is only a surface area average so theres more inconsistency in how far away you hold it and also whatever crud you pick up on the sticky tire driving through the paddock area.

OK, I am going to pick some nits here.

How many do a cool down drive around the paddock area?
How many of you have a crew member ready to take temps and pressures the second you pull into the paddock / pit?
How many of you chart your results?

Take the el cheapo infared and hold it flush to the tire after you unbuckle and get out of the car. You are good to go :-)

This is not to say that the probe isn't more accurate. It is. What I am saying is if you collect data consistently over time, the tool used to measure is not as important as the process.

No cool down. Hot lap and in to paddock asap. Tires cool down fast.

Have someone ready as soon as you can stop to take readings, someone that is in another run group, exchange the service to them as well. When running with friends in the same group we will sacrifice a few laps to take the readings for each other. I don't worry about pressures initially, just the split. Then adjust up or down per tire need based on the delta across the tire.

Results are always charted.
