Header install, new plugs? Photo of mine
I’m presently installing some long tubes, took out the spark plugs. They are AC delco 41-110 and wondering if mine or still good or if I should change them.
Is there any improvement in changing the plugs to better ones? Here is a photo of one of mine. They all look the same. |

it seems like if you have gone to the trouble and expense of headers and the plugs are already out you might as well replace them,IMO.

If it were my car I'd change em while I had them out. It definitely can't hurt. I also think that there is a lot of carbon or oil buildup on those plugs but a mechanic on here may know how to read them better. Attatched is a quick pic

Personally when I installed my headers, the tuner for my car recommended NGK TR6 plugs. I've been running them without issue for a few years now.

It's a good rule of them to change them. NGKs are a popular plug and most of our builds seem them.

Ok great, thanks for the replies. I’ll be heading out in the morning for some plugs.

Most definitely change those out, might as well do it while they are out.

While you at it, get some high end spark plug wires too and heat sleeves to protect them.

I'm just curious, are you running the stock tune now?

It was on stock tune as far as I know.
The headers are installed and only need to get some new plugs in the morning. I have a SCT X4 with a custom tune from dyno Steve loaded on the unit only waiting to be uploaded in the car. |

the oil around the treads is something I would be more concerned about. Your plugs themselves dont look that bad. the color is good and and heat range looks right. I would still change them though. better to start fresh with your new tune and then if something isnt right, you know its not the plugs.

Yeah I was a bit surprised about the oil around the threads however it looks worst in the photo then what it actually is. There was no oil sitting in the spark plug recess like I have seen on a quick internet search.. Who knows if the previous owner may have put a dab of oil on the threads to prevent seizing up... I hope that's all it was.
I installed the old plugs for the time being as I could not make up my mind on which plugs to buy. Local auto parts store gave me two options; NGK Iridium ($9/each) and NGK Ruthenium HX ($13.5/each).. I assume the stock plugs are platinum so either would be an improvement I assume.. Any suggestions? |
