ZL1 - Stick VS. Auto = Which Will Be Faster?

Ok ladies and gents, I have never owned a muscle car before but unless the apple cart turns over I intend on getting a ZL1 next year. I can drive a stick but down the 1/4 and/or from a 40 mph stomp on the highway, which do you think would be faster and why?

Thanks for your input!

If it compares to the CTS-V expect the Auto to be a tick faster....

I recall Fbodfather saying that even though he was a diehard manual enthusiast, he would seriously consider the automatic in the ZL1. Can't remember what thread that was. However, I would take a manual any day over an auto. So regardless of which one is faster, I'm going that route (plus, less family members/friends will ask to drive it since hardly any of them can drive a stick).

with the new technology i would say auto's look at the new 5.0 mustangs, auto's are way faster after a tune. My friends g8 gt with a tune shifted so hard and fast and i believe the tranny in the Z will be similar.

for a stock ss manual FTW. but i think its awesome that they are offering an auto for the ZL1, something that the shelby doesnt have. i would have to take the auto over the manual

The auto definitely faster and more consistent for the average guy. But I think the very fastest times will come from expert manual shifters.

Autos this day and age have came a longgggg way. But still I don't own any auto car and probably won't in the future unless that is all they offer. I don't care about how much faster it is. There is just something so satisfying about rowing your own gears.

I've got a feeling the top 10 will be a mixed bag of autos and manuals.

Auto would probably be a tick faster and more consistant, but no doubt a stick will be more fun

LOL, I thought of this too. My 16 yr old son has already asked if he could drive the car. NOT likely and even less likely if I get a stick!

Everyone made some great points for choosing both the stick or auto. I perused the CTS-V forum last night and noticed that the top 6 or 7 lowest times were all auto with a mixed manual along the way. I am not intending on this being a strip car (by any means) but if some joker pulls along side me on the highway I want to know that he will see my tail lights when I show him 3rd and/or 4th gear. Additionally, I would still want the car to be quick off the line! I have heard good things about the CTS-V auto and I assume that same transmission will come over to the ZL1 since it has performed well in the CTS-V, but none of us know yet. I realize in the end it is all about choice. Although I am leaning toward the stick, I am now beginning to consider the auto idea.

although both my father and brother-in-law know how to drive manual but they would be too scared to drive it because I would flip if they messed her up lol

I'd be getting this car for fun anyways, so Stick it is.. But, like so many others have said, a great stick driver USED to make for the fastest times, but there are so many advancements with the autos now, that it's tough to really say... I did watch a bone stock C6 Z06 with a tire and stick shift, run 11.0's all day. This guy was an ANIMAL shifting though..
