vibration
now and again as I am going down the highway I get a drive train vibration. it starts small and in 15 seconds or so it builds up to quite a shake. I slow down and at about 20 mph it goes away and then is fine for a few weeks. changed over to winter tires and still the same so its not a tire. checked drive shaft and axle shafts and all seems ok. Any body have an idea? car has about 95,000 miles on it.

There are a dozen front end parts that can cause a vibration like you described.
The diagnosis list is fairly long and the methods kind of complicated. Take it to a reputable shop and have them give the front end a once over. Assume that they're going to probably try to sell you stuff you don't need and get a second opinion at another shop and cross reference. This situation can be dangerous and can lead to failure of other parts, so you'll want to get a handle on it asap. |

I had a similar issue, turned out I had a few sheared bolts on my drive-shaft. My shifter would vibrate/shake over 30mph on my M6. Did you check the bolts on your shaft?

Could be a real bear to track this one down... Driveline is a good call though.. hadn't thought of that. Sounds like something is shifting... |

I had a good look at the hole driveline and couldn't find anything loose or missing. the car is manual trans, and the shifter doesn't shake when it happens. The vibration is felt through the seat and the passenger feels it as well. Are those u joints or cv joints in the axle shafts and could one of them be stiff? I am doing an oil change today and will give the front end a good inspection. When I looked at the drive train I didn't really look at the rear suspension. I have never before had a car with independent rear so don't know just what to look fore. Similar to the front I suppose. Thanks for the advice so far.

True, my issue was consistent. Hopefully the OP can track the issue down without having to have a mechanic look at it, would save him some cash in diagnostic fees

went over the front end today while it was up for an oil change and all seems good. called a good friend who has 30+ years as a tec at GM and Ford, he came and had a look too and found all good in the front. checked the front drive shaft coupler again and all bolts tight. I will get the back end up again soon and go over that again. could it be the dif or a wheel bearing?

Could definitely be a wheel bearing. Is it pulling to either side?

nope no pulling at all. no vibe in the steering wheel. same with clutch in or out. had the front brakes of today and the front wheel bearings feel good. hopefully I can get the back brakes off next weekend

If you don't feel it in the wheel I'd think rear hub, drive shaft joint, maybe even balance or a bent wheel or warped rotor.

If it's shaking that may just be pavement. The pavement that is cut up into straight lines causes my car to wobble aggressively. Once I get off that pavement or move to different lane it's back to normal. On this kind of pavement at 60mph it starts wobbling.

not a wheel or tire. it did it on the summer tires too. Winter wheels and tires are on now. got the vibration on the way to work on Monday and it has been like a new car since then. I was hoping to get underneath this weekend and go over that again, but I may have to go to Thunder Bay instead
