Putting 20,000 miles a year
I bought my Camaro back in MI (hometown) in July 09' and within a month, was relocated to SC where my commute is 100 miles round trip. You can imagine the miles at this point on my car. With that said, I'm not struggling to pay for gas or payments by any means, but feel maybe I need to reconsider buying this car a couple years down the road when I can find a closer commute.
I was looking into buying a Jetta TDI for practical purposes and jumping back into a Camaro maybe in 2012 when the convertible comes out. Is there any reason to think the Camaro couldn't hold up going 20,000 miles a year? I know they use this engine on the CTS so it's not brand new. I guess I am just fixed in my ways thinking a sports car can't rack up 120,000 miles in 4-5 years and still run great. I look at it like a fun weekend car or car you take on trips. Not something to rack up 100 highway miles daily on... What do you guys think? |

Maybe buy a inexpensive car for the commute. If not, rack up the miles and buy a new one in '15 if/when they change the body style.

I had a 93 vette for 9 yrs.... had 75k on the odometer when I bought it, and I put 200k on it.... motor was never touched.... so I would think that yes, you could put plenty of miles on it given that the technology is better now and cars last longer....

First off the 3.6L was built for durability. I don't think you will have any problems putting the miles on although it is new territory.

My wife does 120 miles a day and got a Jetta TDI back in 2006. It started off getting 45mpg but today is closer to 36mpg. After the warranty expired (at 160,000 miles), the head failed...$5,860 to get a new (rebuilt) one installed at a local VW dealership. Nobody could get the head anywhere other than VW. The red steering column warning light came on about 65,000 miles back and the dealership wants $2,400 to replace the entire steering column. There are no problems at all with the steering...just that the red warning light came on and won't turn off.
Bottom line is that the TDI turned out not to be the high mileage marvel we expected it to be. I'd roll the dice on the Camaro...buyer beware on the VWs. |

This is the type of stuff I need to hear. I appreciate everyone's comments and responses. I really hate to give this thing up and that engine spec was very helpful as well. I think I'll hold onto this guy and look for a cheap commuter. The only way I plan to trade in is for the convertible.

I use my 2ss as a daily driver until the first snowfall. Got her in sept 09 and have 12k on my car as of today. Not 1 problem other then not enough room to open her up. Change the fluids regularly and limit the burnouts and shes been great.

I have 21,750 on mine and got it June 1. I moved 2 months ago and now save about 500 miles a month just on a commute, but still drive 50 miles a day to and from work.
Figure I'll be around 115,000 miles after 6 years of ownership. By that time there will be something new out there I'll want, but I do plan to keep the Camaro for a fun car. Who knows, maybe I'll get an SS or Z-28 in 5 years and continue to drive my current model daily. Never know what things will be like in 5 years. |

I thought I drove mine alot when I put 3,500 miles on in 1 year... I will be scaling it back to only 2,000 miles this year

I say keep the Camaro. It's the car you love to drive, and you'll be happier in it than a Jetta. Follow the recomended service schedule and you should be just fine. You said yourself that gas/payments aren't an issue, so why not drive the car you love? Come 2015 you'll be ready for the latest and greatest Camaro.
