Settle Mars by 2023?

Ambitious, and I like the idea. We'll see what happens though.

If landing on the moon was one giant leap for mankind, then this would be an afterburner blast! I can only hope our species will never stop trying to explore and continue to survive.

20 years? We can only hope we can devote the money, resources and spirit to make this true.

This is an interesting concept.

My question - how would they handle pregnancy?

2023 is only 10 years away

I support a manned mission to Mars, but $6B to send 4 astronauts to Mars? I'm betting that they'll go further over-budget than anything NASA has done. If they ever get off the ground, that is.

How awesome would it be to drive the first Camaro on Mars... I'm pretty sure it'll need a special tune though.

My question is how would the colony really support itself? You can't send stuff from earth to Mars forever. No livestock, no natural water, no fertile soil... everything on that mission looks temporary

I've read through Mars One's plans, most of their stuff is fairly well thought out. They put a lot of emphasis on the actual psychological factors that people are going to be dealing with, wanting to make sure they send groups of four people that actually get along with each other.

My only reservation is that the public gets to "vote" (American idle style) for the winners of the reality show. Decisions this big should not be left to the public imo. Other than that, I wish them the best of luck

If you read the fine print you'll see that each country picks 1 astronaut and then the Mars One team picks the remaining astronauts.

Also - I'm totally applying for this
