I live at Lake Tahoe, there are a few organized rides with hundreds or thousands of bikes on the road all the way around the lake. they need to cohabitate with the traffic on narrow sections and all in all it goes good with the occational accident and sometimes fatality. It is part of the odds in having mass numbers of bikes and cars together... the other problem they face is most of the cars are tourists so that causes more trouble too. It is the responsibility of the rider to protect themself but the traffic ahead in the same direction has right of way...

Had to go THERE didn't you. SideWALK........WALK........not sideride or path. Bicycles are just as anoying to walkers on a side walk and when road riding in a peloton (look it up) a sidewalk with pedestrians can be pretty dangerous at speeds over 20 mph. A sidewalk can be pretty dangerous.
