Anyone have problems getting tires put on?

I was trying to get the Z/28 ready for Caffeine and Octane this morning here in Atlanta, but can't find anyone close by to mount the tires.

Two different dealerships tell me they couldn't, or wouldn't do them.... the one that wouldn't, cited the value of the wheels and the concern about gouging.

By the time yesterday that the first place backed out, it was 3pm and I was left with dwindling options.... All of the Chevrolet dealerships are too far away or were close (the tires on the car are severely dry-rotted and not safe to drive on).

A buddy of mine owns a shop and he was concerned about putting 305s on my wheels with his machine so he took them to Butler tire and they did them no problem.

Problem is.... Butler is too far to drive on these super dry-rotted tires and I do not have the capacity to jack the car up to take the wheels off here.

I had the same problem Chevy dealer couldn't do it. I ended up going to my GMC dealer. They did a great job and also road force balanced them.

Similar problem here. But there's a way to find out who can do them. Get a hold of someone from your local SCCA group. Ask them where they get their tires done. Most guys that run autocross and road race, will be running 25-35 series tires, and they'll have a go-to guy. Luckily for us we have 2 brothers that race a LOT that have a sweet tire machine and balancer. They have a monopoly over here on mounting the tricky tires.

Here's a link to your local groups members:

If the tires are holding air, they're safer than you think to drive on. Any custom wheel shop will be able to handle Z/28 wheels. Good luck.

See... that makes no sense to me.... a dealer familiar with Corvettes (especially Grand Sports and Z06's) should have no problem with these.

I took it to a local Ford dealer that sells Roush and Shelby Mustangs because by the time the first time place said they couldn't do it, I had limited options yesterday and I figured that a place that does Shelby's could do this.... and the General Manager just turned me down flat and said he wouldn't risk it.

As for the condition of the tires, no only are they dry-rotted but also have a strong flat spot.... in sunny, hot weather they feel unsafe to drive on above 30mph.... above 45 they were scary and extremely loud.

Googled custom wheel places near me, none in an acceptable distance (they seem uncommon out here until you get a lot closer to the city).

All the usual suspects I'd call now are closed on Sunday. Just pissed me off that the place I took it to initially had the car for almost 4 hours before calling me to tell me their machine was broken.... and by then 90% of the places I had as a backup were closed or would be by the time I got there.

Check out a higher-end dealership.
I work at a BMW dealership, and we get the Nissan dealership next door bringing us all their GT-R wheels over to M&B. They don't trust their old equipment.

This! I had my tires delivered to a Ferrari/Lambo/Porsche/MB/BMW show, my wheels were the least of their problems! Took AWESOME care of me too, as they dont always see a track Camaro.

Wow, confusing for sure! Our local Chevrolet dealerships (2 of them) do these and corvette wheel/tire combo's. They did ours! We also have two tire dealerships that have machines that do not touch the rim. Man are they sweet!

This is what I did before having new tires put on:

Automotive painters tape -- just in case (yes, I've had them scratched before ;oO)

Got it taken care of.... was picking up some stuff to do an oil change on my daily at Advance, and happened to run into a local specialty tire/wheel person.... they handled the car real nice, shop seemed full of car enthusiasts.

I was in tire business for over 20 years and left around 2000 and I have to admit with all these 17"+rims that came out it was a good time to exit but I just swapped out all mine at Fires&%*# that I had stayed friends with since leaving and they let me do my own thing, it was tough as these are just big tires a helper would of been nice! you just have to be careful. yes the machines have changed over the years hell just programming the balance machine is a PITA I do get one of the guys to set it up for me and I'm good. Heck I even remember using a bubble balancer
