DSE Cradle Bushings - Corrosion??

Hey boys... getting these ushings installed soon, and am v3ry worried about having corrosion or rust begin after the install... anyone had these installed years ago with no issues? Better to go with the poly or no??

They’re aluminum.

It’s actually a valid question as aluminum against steel will cause dissimilar metal corrosion if not protected. Aluminum can also corrode quite rapidly so again it’s a valid question and concern. But, no one has brought up any issues as of yet. I believe this will be a few years down the road when the “next generation” of 5th gen owners begin to rebuild suspension and find these aluminum inserts with white chalky material eating away at the pucks causing clunking sounds as driving. That is why in the aviation world, almost everything is coated. Aluminum or other metals are used for the lightweight properties.

They are coated, they are black anodized.

Aluminum does not corrode, per say, it sheds layers, and I have seen it turn into
a powder like substance on Land Rovers. It also depends on the quality of the metal.
Any iron or other rustable metal contamination will ruin it. This is the reason the Ford
Mustang ALUMINUM hoods are oxidizing and getting paint bubbles.

Aluminum oxidation happens faster than that of steel, because aluminum has a really
strong affinity for oxygen. Rather than flaking though, aluminum oxide just forms a
hard, whitish-colored surface skin. When all the aluminum atoms have bonded with
oxygen though, the oxidation process stops. Therefore, you can’t do much about
aluminum oxidation, and unless appearance matters to you, it’s not a big problem
compared to iron.

Aluminum does not rust, scratching the oxide skin exposes the bare metal, and the
process begins. It won’t eat the metal away though, except under two conditions.
First, if chlorides or sulfides are around they’ll attack the aluminum oxide layer.
You can also get galvanic corrosion. That is an electrical effect experienced when
dissimilar metals are brought close together in a conducting liquid. That's what
SIM GhostrdZ was getting at. However, when aluminum is galvanized, it does not
conduct electricity.

Galvanizing is one preventative procedure, as is painting and powder coating.

I’ll go along with you except it is technically called corrosion. There are, as you know, many types and many preventative measures.

Wow, I appreicate the feedback... so, if I plan to keep this thing until I die, the poly-stuff is probably the safest route to take then, eh?

If you have dse, then go with them. Solid bushing are the best, imho. I have poly in my v6 and they are much better than stock but solid are great. I’ve got a solid set for the Z28 but haven’t installed them yet.

Will you be driving in salt or corrosive environments?

If not, I wouldn't worry about it.

Yes they are anodized, and some anodizing could come off upon installation causing the above mentioned dissimilar material corrosion, but I hardly think it would be any problem.

The shop just received them today - I'm a bit OCD, so the last thing I would want is for this to rust... might just oil spray it every year and wish for the best

Nope, that thing hasn't seen salt yet... only driven on warm days, and sprayed every spring... I'll go ahead with them then.

Thanks guys!

I have had them, DSE solid subframe bushings, in my car three years now and no visible corrosion so far.

I get under it every Spring just to check for any spots that might have shown up over the Winter. The area around the bushings hasn't ever shown any issues. This past Winter was the first it wasn't my daily driver.

Good to know, gotta spray it comes May... the damn thing seems to be clunking in the rear on both sides after the instal... could it have something to do with the install of the DSE?

Yep, they are anodized. DSE makes a great quality part. Put them on and don't worry.
