I think Siri was on the level of being "laughably" bad until iOS 10 or 11. I remember when it first launched on the iPhone 4s. Back then, people were more amused with the novelty of the concept of a "virtual assistant" and would waste hours asking it dumb questions or trying to find Easter egg responses. Shortly after, the original Siri team that developed the technology in the first place left Apple within a year or two after their acquisition, and it just sort of stagnated. Apple would pile more and more pre-programmed query / reply combinations, but the actual technology never improved.

I think Amazon Alexa is what finally gave Apple a very much needed kick in the pants. Alexa would understand the actual context of a conversation, including pronouns in reference to terms that came up in previous questions or responses. It had better overall voice recognition. The required phrasing of questions was much less restrictive and allowed for more natural conversations. Apple eventually closed the gap somewhat and Siri now has many of those qualities too.

Bottom line is: Competition is good and drives innovation. Or it at least forces competitors hands to copy the successes of others where needed and raise the bar industry-wide.

Because not every one has basic tech skills and some people actually like to customize to their liking beyond chagnging background wallpaper. Also people like the higher end hardware, especially a high resolution OLED screen, makes a world of a difference with a better high screen.

Just found this statement when I googled about the update..... "Waze tells USA TODAY that it will have its app ready for CarPlay "shortly after iOS 12 is launched," but the company did not provide an exact date."

The Waze for CarPlay update is currently in Beta testing. I have not been able to find a date for final release. Speculation is October
