Breaking loose

I have a 2014 convertible, manual 6 speed, stock except cold air induction and ported throttle body. My problem is: at a rolling start, when I stomp on it the tires never break loose even with traction control off. I would think with 580 HP it should break loose fairly easy. My question is: is everybody else in the same boat? Want to burn rubber, thanks for any input.

what gear are you in ? in 2nd gear with mine if i go to the floor it will spin and get sideways if I'm not careful, first gear you should be able to spin them right to redline real quick

I got the same car in a 2015 and I felt the same way. Under ideal conditions with hot road and warm tires this thing takes off with minimal or zero wheel spin. I normally just pop the clutch a little to break em loose and enjoy the smoke show. If it is cooler however, I've had the wheels break loose in second.

I also thought with 580hp this thing would be all over the road. I guess with modern engineering and good rubber it isn't the case.

I probably shouldn't admit this but I've thought about buying some crappy rims and tires and swapping them out so I could burn em off for a weekend. No high speed stuff. Just massive burnouts without dropping a grand on 2 back tires.

You shouldn't be having any trouble breaking them loose. I've got an automatic, and since I got a tune and headers, it will spin them when it shifts into third. A tune really wakes these cars up.

In reality the less the tires break loose the better. That just means they are doing their job and sticking.

I have no issues getting loose.....

Oh...we're talking about the rear tires on a ZL1...never mind.

From a rolling start is the easiest, or worst depending on what you are looking for. Traction means go, slip is showing off and going no where, plus easy target for tickets. I cant remember how the verts are set up for PTM, but in the coupe anything but PTM4 or 5 or off the traction control is going to do its best to stop any slip.

I remember when mine was stock it didn't really want to spin the tires at all. I turned the traction control off but it still didn't matter. Then I turned everything off by holding the traction control button for seven seconds and then it would spin the tires easily.

I had a manual 13 ZL1 and I could break the tires loose in first and second easy. Chirp them in third and this was stock.
I'd say it's the driver mod. Sorry!

I have a 2013 manual and also thought 580HP would be a little more "crazy". I can spin through 1st while rolling and a little of 2nd but not much. It will not spin just flooring it in 2nd. My 2002 Z06 was much more of a handful in 1st and 2nd than my ZL1. Maybe it's the 90+degree FL weather?

You're right. It is the temperature. First, your engine is probably not making optimal power all the time because of the high temps. Second, the stock GY tires work well when they're HOT. Here in PA, i noticed a lot more grip and slightly less power during the summer. (90-95° days) Just the other day it was 85° driving to my friend's house. I had decent grip. I could WOT at 45mph in 2nd gear and not lose any traction. Driving home later that night, it was about 68° out. I did another WOT at 45mph in 2nd gear and my back end fishtailed a decent amount. Enough to let off the gas a bit and regain traction. I remember when I first got it in February this year and drove it on a 40° day. I could barely go 50% throttle from a standstill in 2nd gear without breaking lose and fishtailing. I also broke loose a bit doing a WOT at 65mph in 3rd gear during the same cold temps earlier this year. So don't worry, find "optimal boost temps" and the ZL1 will be a little more "crazy."

The car loves 30 to 50 degrees, you can feel the difference in the car at those temps.
