The real reason

The real reason they use the chase planes to "talk" them down is because the pilot is totally unable to see the ground or runway while landing. The ****pit is extremely compact and the pilot has no ability to move head or upper torso to see over the planes sides or nose. There was a history channel special on just this subject the other night. I saw these come and go in Vietnam many times...awesome plane.

......... a while back my I posted my thoughts for a commercial spot with the ZL1 taking off with a F-117 Nighthawk. That would be so cool....but this one is also a nice visual representation of fancifull flight on the ground and air between two cool high peformance machines.

That was a really interesting and awesome segment. Thanks for posting it!

...and sorry OldSchool, that would be a great video, but they retired the F-117 in 2008. If you get a petition going to pull one out of the mothballs, I'll gladly sign it.

My buddy was in the Air Force in the early 1970s. He said they used two high performance El Caminos to chase down the U2 to add the gear struts to the outer wings so the U2 could taxi once it landed.

I'm pretty sure the first 2 videos are from Beale AFB. This base has been using a Summit White SS with black stripes for the past year or so.
I saw some of these U2 landings when I was in Korea. They used a 4th gen LS1 Camaro as the chase car.

I remember going to Beale AFB when I was in the Boy Scouts. They said that an SR71 was about to take off and we could watch it. We walked out to the field just as this thing tore down the runway, flipped his afterburner just after he passed us and went completely vertical for take off. We were in complete awe! That was just before the MPs came running up and said that we were supposed to be on the far side of the taxi way and not on the actual runway. I think that was my first O.
