60 foot time
Hi all. I'm a little confused. I read talk about gears and 60' times and too low of a gear and you'll shift into 2nd before 60'. My question is, what is the concern if someone shifts into 2nd at the 58' mark vs 62' mark? Isn't all about your final E.T, or am I missing something?

I think they are more talking about shifting at say 30' or 40'. 58 is close enough I would worry. WHat you do need to look at is a balance between SLR and trap gear ratio. You would want steeper to start but lower to finish. Which is why close ratio TH400's or powerglides are so popular.

The very best way to get your car optimized at the drag strip is to tune it while you are there or have someone who knows how to do it with you.
Shift points have to be optimized based upon what converter/gear combo you are running, and since you don't launch the car on the dyno, your initial shift points from 1st to 2nd probably need some adjustment. My car was cutting consistent 1.53-1.54 60' times on my initial tune. Now at my local dragstrip, it will cut 1.49 after track tuning. What this ended up for the ET was a drop from 7.2X in the 1/8th mile, to 7.1X, in good DA and good prep. If only I weighed 130 instead of 230, I could run 6.9x. The biggest thing though at the dragstrip is dialing in the light. You can have a great 60', and everything tuned to perfection, but if you aren't cutting 0.1X or lower lights, you can and will lose to slower cars, and have no chance of beating a slightly faster car. I'd much rather beat a car that runs 6.8, than post a PB ET, because I won the battle at the tree, and the race by a slim margin.
