4 yr old tires as "new" from Tire Rack

I just got a "new" tire order from Tire Rack. The fronts are 2021's the rears are 2019's. Any thoughts on running tires stamped 3119 (31st week in 2019 or week of July 29, 2019)? If they were stored properly are they ok? Supposedly they age out in use only or 6 yrs from mfg date.

I’m sure they’re fine but those 2019 tires should really not be sold as “new”. That’s pretty crazy IMO. I’d have a chat with Tire Rack.

Well, to put this in perspective, my tires I bought 2.5 years ago are newer, and the previous set had been manufactured only about 2 months earlier.

It might technically be legal to sell these as new, and Tire Rack claims to store them out of the sun in air-conditioned facilities, but this would leave a sour taste in my mouth...

Yeah I am thinking while they may not explode, the rubber compound has hardened compared to a newer tires so not as much grip. Well I probably need a bit more oversteer LOL.

Not sure if it will affect tire life on the track (why I bought them). Normally I get about 4 days - 4 25 min sessions each day per tire set.

Wondering also if Goodyear made batches of SC3R tires until about '21, then stopped.

Hello fellow Austinite! I've bought new tires direct from Goodyear before that were a couple years old per the date code and they were fine. So 2021 I would accept but 2019 is too old. What did TR say when you talked to them about it?

I'm no tire expert, but can tell you what I've been told. Once a tire is scrubbed and went through a heat cycle or 3, then the clock is ticking. If it has never been mounted before, it "should" be ok, however if it were me, I'd be calling Tire Rack asap and ask them for a discount or something.

Usually TR offers older tires at a large discount. I'd want to pay about half price for 2019s.

Storing tires indoors only protects them from deteriorating due to sun exposure. It does not protect them from ozone damage unless they are thoroughly cleaned and sealed in plastic or something equivalent.

The sidewalls on 4 year old tires stored indoors on a rack haven't deteriorated as much as if they were in use but they aren't in new condition either and shouldn't be sold as such.
