Thank you for your decision to serve. I wish you well.
On the running, it will come to you. We don't need to be 4 minute mile folks, what the Corp or the Military is asking for is a good consistent run. The more you run, the easier it will become. Find a comfortable pace and stick with that. My personal best for the 1.5 mile run was a 9:30 and that was in my mid 30's after I had come back from Desert Storm in 91. Wish I could say I could still do that now in my mid 50's! Retired First Sergeant |

No matter what you do to get ready for the rock, it won't be enough but you will have fun (after boot camp). I was in from 97-2002 got a E5 and loved every min of it. go to the west coast the east coast sucks.Boot camp is no joke but you can do it.Have fun and keep your mouth shut.

The east coast was the armpit of the marine corps at one point... but in the past 6 years it has come A LONG WAY... its not bad anymore... and a whole lot cheaper than living in california.

just remember that boot camp doesnt last forever even though it will feel like it. All the stress and such you will feel when you are there, its designed to be that way. Just take it day to day and week to week.
Adjusting from civilian to military life can be hard, but just remember that your entire career is not like basic. On the other side of that, remember what you are taught, it really does form the basis of everything you will do. |

Sgt. Steven Roberts is my recruiter and yes I will be at the pool function. I've been running almost two weeks straight and I feel great. My legs still aren't quite used to it but I can run a complete mile if I block out the soreness. I'm not worried about it anymore lol. I figured my concerns were premature but oh well. I got a bunch of nice comment from good people that appreciate what the armed forces do and that makes me feel good about my choice. My name is Stanley Brown if you try to find at the pool function, hope to see you there.

Any Marine is a good Marine, but us air wing Marines are a different breed. We wear our hair a little longer, we take a few extra smoke breaks, and tend to have a little more fun at work.

Congrats on you decision and I hope you learn as much while serving as I did. I would not trade my time in the Corps for anything. And don't sweat the running that much. I was never a distance runner but did OK in basic training.
I do have one question. Since when did they start calling it boot camp? When I was in it was Marine Corp Basic Training and we got flogged if we called it boot camp. (Not trying to be an a$$. Just want to know)

I don't know, my recruiter had been calling it boot camp since day one so that's what I call it. I'm sure I will be corrected very quickly when I get there if I'm wrong lol.

Hell yeah, especially since we won! I still need to work on my running cause I didn't make the mile in a half in 13:30 but it wasn't cause I was winded really, my shins hurt like hell, I need some new shoes the ones I'm running in are way past their prime lol.
