Steering Wheel Falling Apart

Anybody else have this problem? The outer layer of my steering wheel has, for about the last 10k miles, been rubbing off in my hand. I drive predominately with my left hand at 12 o'clock on the wheel and my right on the gearshift. I'm at 54k miles. I bought the car new in March '13. Never had a car do this before. Seems like a cheap material that the wheel is made from. Am I the only one with this problem, or are others having similar issues?

Most Gm vehicles i've driven over time have done the same thing. Thats why I always use a steering wheel cover to prevent this from happening. Put one on the camaro within the first week of purchasing it.

The rubber wheel in my v6 did that. And the rubber separated from the core. Had to get a new one. Upgraded to leather when I did. Much more durable.

It's an easy diy to replace the wheel.... Just not exactly cheap

Lotions speed it up, but it happens to all rubber wheels. About the only way to prevent it is to put a cover on or switch it to a leather wheel.

If you plan on selling your zl1 in 2 years please remember me. As far as the post that's more reason to get the suede or leather wheel lol

My very abused 1978 Firebird Formula did that. After the car was almost 20 years old.

Shouldn't be happening to a car only three years old.

I was thinking the same thing. Or the op's sweat is attacking the steering wheel . I've never seen anything like that in any of my cars. My steering wheel is fine in my 1LS I'm at 32k+ miles.

I guess OP gets a bit too heavy on the lotion and make up.
