Spare Tire Revisited Z/28
I just signed up for the HotRod Power Tour Long Haul.
I’ll be putting together a roadside kit with pump, plugs, goo-in-a-can. I think I still need a compact spare. I searched the threads and found back in 2015-17 threads about a company that must have had one just for a Z/28 but it only went on the rear, move a rear to the front with a spacer worst case, something like that. All those links back then are ‘Page not found 404’. So, back to the drawing board. I found this, $400 20”. Anyone used it? I didn’t see any back space or any drawings of the wheel but they say ‘clears big brakes’, yeah we’ll see about that. Looking for feedback on this wheel or any suggestions for what else is out there. https://ez-sparewheel.com/products/2...0&%20Submodels) |

I'm looking to buy as well. Modernspare used to make one and even had it on their website out of stock until a few weeks ago. I just emailed them, may try to call tomorrow as well to see if they plan to make more or restock.

Good news. I just spoke to Modernspare.com and they have re-engineered the spare so it won't need a spacer. They verified it's not on their website anymore as a pre-order so the guy I spoke to said he would reach out to their webmaster and try to fix that today. They are just waiting on the final testing on a customers Z/28 before selling again but couldn't give me a solid date.

Really? Mine came with a spacer. It was purchased last year so probably old model. Nice that spacer is not needed.

Yup, no spacer. For some reason it doesn't say it specifically works with the Z/28 so I reached out again and asked them to include in the description. Hopefully they will fix it today as well. Here is the link to the spare, it's a pre-order right now and it does mention needing the spacer previously in the description:

That’s awesome. I was looking to buy one of these but never pulled the trigger. Let us know if you hear anything more or they are up for sale!

Thanks for the update! I have been wanting a spare for a while
I wish I could do the power tour, but they love waiting until January to announce the dates and routes My vacation bids at the railroad need to be submitted by December 1st so I never know the weeks to bid for and rarely lucky enough to be off that week(s) I actually was able to have the dates in 2020 worked out perfectly but then Covid hit, it was postponed and I couldn’t change my vacation I tried to email hot rod years ago to let them know that people that work in certain industries like railroads and airlines need to bid BEFORE the first of the year, and it would be helpful to announce the dates before their typical mid January announcement. Super cool that you are doing the power tour in a Z. I wish we had a Northwest power tour. I'd love do that either in my Z or my other street car.

Glad to see our Z/28s will be well represented. One thing to think about when doing your prep is if you get a flat will the damaged tire/rim assy fit in the trunk or backseat if you're loaded down for a roadtrip. I haven't tried to cram one of our 305s into the trunk, I assume I'd have to leave the trunk open until I got home or to a tire shop. Bring some bungee cords!
Added a photo of one of my old 305s in the trunk. You definitely need to take this into consideration.

A 305/30-19 on a 19x11 wheel will fit in the trunk, I've done it. But, I do not recall if I fit a 325/30-19 on an 19x11.5 wheel.

The trunk is good size but the opening really limits what you can put in there.

When I took a 2,500 mi trip, i toyed with the idea of just taking a spare 305/30/19 Trofeo I had. Even with a compact spare tire/wheel, you're only getting off the side of the road. You need a 305/30/19 (or similar spec) to complete the trip. I ultimately just packed a scissor jack, electric pump, plugs, slime. Gambled with no spare of any sort. Figured I'd dismount the wheel/tire myself, if need be, and then Uber to/from tire shop. I wasn't traveling anywhere really remote and I'd only be driving during the daylight hours.
