Idea on orange peel

There are several topics mentioning the excessive orange peel in the new Camaro's finish and I have an idea why there may be more than in the previous version. I've noticed this on every Camaro I've looked at, and the 2010 black seems to have more than my '96 T/A did. I was watching the Ultimate Factory episode on Nat Geo and noticed the Camaro is primed with an electrically charged powder coating process that is baked at 275 degrees before the color coats and clear coats are applied. I've had a few things powder coated before, and the powder coat didn't smooth out quite as smooth as a paint process does. If the surface under the paint is not perfectly smooth, then any finish applied on top of it would take on the texture of the surface underneath. I don't think the 4th gen would have used a powder coating as primer, since it had plastic panels.

My 2010 is black and does not have excessive orange peel. It looks great. And 2010s also have plastic front and rear facias, No problem there either.

Mine is not black but my paint is very smooth, Victory red and I have no complaints with quality and I restore, customize and show cars so I have avery critical eye. You have to look real close to see any orange peel in mine but I am sure darker colors show it more.

Orange peel is exactly as it sounds. Imagine the texture of the outside of an orange- the "bumpy" texture so to speak. Go to one corner of your car and look up/down the entire length IN GOOD LIGHT. "Perfect" paint will look like a mirror reflection down the length of the car. Instead, you will see waves and "bumps". That's orange peel in it's easiest defined terms. It can be removed by wet sanding BUT ONLY BY SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE DOING.

lucky. mine has orange peel and mis-colored plastic parts(gas cap, front and rear fascia, spoiler lip, mirrors). different shades of blue...

In the Camaros I've looked at on the lots, orange peel varies quite a bit between them. Color and metallic shift on the plastic parts vary too with some being perfect and others making me wonder how they pass QC.

The orange peel is in the clear coat, not the color coat, so I don't think the primer is to blame.

I did a test bit on mine and blocked the orange peel down. As far as clear thickness its as good as most other GM cars. It is very hard clear. I will probly do the whole car over the winter bit by bit. Not recommended for most people though because the edges will be unforgiving. Ill do it because Im a Wetsanding Jedi.

Just to show an example of what your paint can look like if you fix the orange peel (in my case I had it sanded, re-cleared and sanded & buffed) Here is a picture I just took of the hood of my black SS. You can see the reflection of my garage ceiling - a mirror finish! Well worth the expense in my book.

I don’t have that orange peel finish look like the ones I had seen lately within the past months. Could this be a problem that started to occur after March 2009?

I have an IBM that was built the week of 10/12 and it definitely has orange peel. I'll snap a pic after dinner for those that don't know what it looks like.
