Selling a cammed camaro

Are there any gotchas when selling your car after you’ve cammed it? This is mostly directed towards a trade in or Carmax sale,. Thanks!

Usually they don’t give you any extra money for engine mods. Best way to get the full value is private sales

If anything I'd say having cams installed will lower the value since not everyone wants to deal with modifications. Selling to private party will always give you the better price but you have to shop for the right buyer.

I could imagine a place like Carmax or a dealership not wanting to take a highly modified car in for trade, unless they plan to send for auction. They are not going to want to warranty a car like that and won't want to work on it themselves if they plan to resell. It is a headache for them and usually they will lose money on it if they want to return it to stock.

As said above, private sale is your best bet. This way you can take advantage of the mods done and use that as a strength to advertise to the right buyer. Not everyone is discouraged from buying an already modified car if they know it was done right and exactly what was done.

Probably won't affect the value one way or the other.

Mods don’t add value... Sell it privately. When I wanted a new car, I wanted to see what they were going to give me for my modded G8, needless to say they wanted to give e me 5k less than when I sold it privately.

Man, I’d love a cam but just have other money pits. Just bought a boat. But, I’d have to see the cam invoice and date / miles since install before I’d get too serious. Even as a private buyer.

Oh man, boats are the biggest of them all. But when they are running right they are a blast. I sold mine years ago to someone that was interested in rebuilding the interior. I didn't have the funds at the time to do it right. He did a great job.

Frankly I’d never buy a modded car unless I knew the person who owned it and the person or company who actually did the mods. Some minor little mods like a CAI wouldn’t bother me but even then I think it would be better to convert back to stock if possible.

Go to NADA guides, and enter your car. The "rough trade" is what a dealer will offer you, unless you're looking to trade for something they have. They may raise the offer a little to sell you their car.

These guys are right. Mods will almost never add any value to a vehicle when traded.

If you're dead-set on trading it in, it all depends on the dealer. When I traded my SS, it was cammed, etc., etc., etc.. The Chevy dealer that I deal with, sells a lot of Corvettes and they are accustomed to buying/selling modded vehicles. They gave me $$$ more than what my car was actually worth by a considerable amount, but this is a rarity and most dealers will not care (or even frown upon engine mods). Try to find a cool (mod friendly) dealer and give them a shot. IMHO, this is your best bet.
