Update. Drove home from work and I'm not imagining things. It is quieter. No more popping at all. I checked to see if the rubber piece had any dents, marks, cuts or damage and all is well. Here's a pic

Here's some situations where mine did it: going down the highway at 55 there is a part in the highway that they must have busted up to run pipe or something. The repair isn't very good and it pops or boings real loud when it hit it. Also, the speed bumps at my work, one of them I hit while turning. Then the road leading to my neighborhood has lots of ripples in it and it used to do it badly. And when I turn into my driveway

How hard was it to get this top nut off so you could insert the "washer"?

Do you have any more pictures showing some of the steps to do this? I'm guessing it is simple, I'm just not seeing it at the moment.

I have a clunk from time to time when I pull into my driveway and could never figure out what it was. I'm going to have to try this.

The Nut

Can you remove the nut without anything coming apart? What is the tourque spec when putting it back on?

Unscrew the plastic cap on the nut. Then unscrew the nut. That's all. Nothing to hold or come apart. You really need an impact wrench to do it. Makes it much easier. Torque spec. Didn't think they had one. I've never torqued a strut, I've change several dozen or more of them. Just tighten it tight, it's a lock nut also.

Would you mind giving this a test?

Take the top nut and retaining plate off. Gran an impact wrench and hit the strut nut with a couple of burps. This will make sure the nuts are tight. Reinstall just the OE retaining plate and nut. Hit the nut with the impact to make certain it is tight. Let us know if the noise comes back.

I'll try it. Are the threads reverse? In other words since I'm tightening on the strut shaft, would regular tightening it actually loosen it? Not trying to confuse anyone, but I'm sure you get what I'm saying pete?

Ummm...now it seems louder than before I installed the rubber washers. Does that make sense?

something is loose up there as Pete was trying to get at.
the rubber piece you installed shouldn't be in there, the only thing the top plate you removed actually does is stop the strut from falling out of the car when it's lifted. so if putting something in there makes the noise stop then it's a concern.

have someone push the car up and down in the front while you have your hand on the top of the mount, do you feel a thunking or anything?
