I was looking in the V8 performance forum and reading up a bit on the whole zinc thing and it seems like it is important for every motor but even more for cars with bigger cams or FI. I have been using Mobil 1 in my old 4.3 V6 blazer since I got it at 100K miles on it. It now has over 200K and it doesn't burn any oil and i beat the heck out of it but I always changed the oil at 5K miles. I don't have any internal mods on my Camaro V6 now but I have been using Mobil 1 5w-30 high mileage cause they claim it has better heat protection than normal syn. I was looking at a web page that claimed the high mileage oil has 900 zinc and 1000 phos. but they have a 5w-40 that's made for diesels that has 1100 zinc and 1200 phos. Could I use the 5w-40 and get better protection or will the higher weight negate that effect?

You're fine with 5W-30, you really dont need the extra ZDDP. As a matter of fact i run Pennzoil ultra 5w-30 in both of my wife's LTs. Dont want to screw up your cats.

My owner's manual calls for 5W-50 synthetic, so I run Motorcraft. Not many choices in the 5W-50 category.

I have found that Redline Oil will run a cooler oil temp. I am running Redline 5W40 in my newly built LS3. I have great oil pressure and a low operating temp.

Zinc is very hard on catalytic converters. That is why mfgrs. want oil that has minimal levels to try to reduce failure while under warranty. The LS3 and L99 have roller cams so running a oil high in Zinc really does not apply.

I can tell you that running my offshore power boat with Mobil 1 vs. Redline, the Mobil 1 ran 50 degrees hotter oil temp. Same engine, same operating conditions. I did this test several times, and really I could not believe there could be that big of a difference. But I proved it many times.
I am not down on Mobil 1 at all. I use it in my Tahoe and it works great. I think there are better oils available for more extreme condition running engines.

From my previous experience, I've found that Mobil1 gets EXTREMELY thin (and lots of gas in it) after 3000 miles. My previous car (Subaru) would get really noticable piston slap after 2000 miles on Mobil1. I switched to Shell Rotella T 5w40 (yes, a diesel oil) and I've had no issues with any burning, thinning, noise, anything. I bought a ton of it, so I'm still using it. It's not rated the same as an oil primarily meant for unleaded use, but I figure that any oil that's meant for super high compression and long service life has gotta be good. Plus, it's super cheap, and comes in gallon jugs when my car takes 2 gallons.

It's a full synthetic, with excellent film strength, and lots of metals just because why not. It's really a win-win situation.

I use Royal Purple in my baby. Nothing but the best. Also use K&N Filter. No cheap oil in my baby.

Just curious...what does the dealership use for reg and synthetic oil changes? What type of filter? I just picked up a used 2012 LS and want to change the oil. If I change the oil myself, what do I have to keep up with to make sure the warranty isn't voided?
