Pennzoil was purchased by Shell a few years ago and they changed the oil base stock and formulation to be close to what Shell sells in Europe (Helix) from what I recall. Quaker State got the same treatment. Shell is just focused on selling the best quality oils, sort of the new Mobil 1. Everyone liked Mobil1 but were concerned about some issues, such as high iron in wear tests and subjective stuff like noisy valve trains. Pennzoil seems to be better in both cases.

If you want to see a good comparison of 5w-30 oils check this link: http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g3115.pdf?zo=5348948

The test was completed by a third party and covers many of the oils we would consider running. I personally run AMSOIL in all my stuff. From what I have seen and experienced it is the best synthetic available. Had bad experiences with Royal Purple and wont use it again.
