Brake Caliper Bolts

I read somewhere that the brake caliper bolts should be replaced any time they are removed. I've never seen that on any other car I've worked on... Can anyone confirm/deny that based on GM documentation?

While I'm asking questions, anyone know the torque spec for those bolts?

They are torque to yeild bolts so they are really only meant to be used once. I'm pretty sure that's how they are on most cars.

most people reuse them without incident...most dealers do not replace the caliper bolts. Surprisingly, it was mentioned that many dealerships don't replace head bolts either. I retorqued my caliper bolts without any problem, but I suppose we should do what GM suggests.

There like $8 dollars....cheap insurance when messing with your brakes IMHO.

I've reused mine and the car has seen some pretty heavy breaking and some light track use. That being said, I should have replaced them technically.

from over the years my experience is any bolt that has a 10.9 12.9 on the head can not be a one time use
as that's a metric grade rating

As best as I can tell, these bolts are not "torque to yield". They are indeed "torque to angle", and according to my torque wrench, the factory torque process puts them right about at the recommended maximum torque for the bolt size and grade.

The bolts do have thread locker applied as supplied, and I suspect that this is the reason for the recommendation to replace them after each use.

If in doubt, follow the factory recommendations. This is not a place to be making half-ass assumptions just because some random dude on the internet did some arm-chair engineering "analysis".

For anyone curious, a GM tech found in the service information that these bolts should be replaced when removed. For such a low price, I'm going with that advice. Thanks for the input!

Part number 11570788 - Qty 4 - Torque 30 ft lbs + 90 degrees

Not doubting anyone, but I work in aerospace and have never heard of a torque that was xx lbs plus xx degrees after reaching that initial number.

It's common practice in cars. Specifically in motor work. When you are working on heads, you typically use that method. Also, the GM spec is below for the brakes on our cars.

Any bolt where the tq spec is given in degrees past a tq is a TTY bolt.

TTY is a more consistent tq when sealants, lubes, locking agents... are used. Those things can throw the tq reading way off, so to get a consistent clamp and bolt stretch you do it in degrees. The bold stretching will maintain a stronger clamp force.

It can only be done once though, the second stretch to that length will not have the same clamping force. It's been fatigued and will just keep stretching instead of clamping. If someone successfully re-used a TTY bolt, they probably didn't stretch it the second time and it is not tq'd properly.

At a drag strip near me there was a critical head injury, someone got hit by a harmonic balancer at the starting line. As the lawsuits were flying, one of the defendants had a failure analysis done. End result... a TTY balancer bolt had been reused and snapped. The shop that did the last motor refresh was in a world of hurt. Any time negligence is involved, it can become $$$$$$$ and even criminal.

If you see anyone re-using a TTY bolt, you are looking at an idiot. Harsh, but fact. They teach that sht in HS auto shop, let alone a tech degree, state certification tests....
