Current V6 has more HP than Any Previous Gen V8?
I just got an email from Chevy Performance that details the previous Camaro performance numbers. Does this mean my 2011 312HP V6 has more HP than any of the previous gen V8s, or are they leaving out some engines that did better? Please don't go on about the weight difference, yes I know.
================================= THE FIRST-GEN LINK: 1969 CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 COPO 9560 The 2012 ZL1 is the proud namesake of a definitive supercar. In 1969, 69 regular-production Camaros were installed with ZL1 all-aluminum racing engines, Central Office Production Order # 9560. Those 69 myth-making COPO cars became the ultimate in Camaro performance. Among the most fearsome factory-built supercars of all time, the original ZL1 boasted a quarter mile time of 11.6 seconds. Burgundy Camaro THE SECOND-GEN LINK: 1977 Z28 By the time the second generation hit, Camaro had permanently ingrained itself into the fabric of America. After a two-year hiatus, the much-loved and lauded Z28 package made its triumphant return to market via a 1977 model, to the ecstatic delight of Camaro enthusiasts everywhere. The second coming of the Z28 was powered by a 350 cubic-inch V8 and cranked out 185 horsepower. High-performance street vehicles were still somewhat rare, and the half-year model was an enormous hit. Quarter-mile times were on par with the most formidable muscle cars. White Camaro THE THIRD-GEN LINK: 1985 IROC Z28 1985 saw the introduction of an all-new Camaro package, the IROC Z28, named for the now-defunct International Race of Champions. The LB9 Tuned Port Fuel Injected 305 cid engine was rated at a chart-topping 215 hp. The IROCZ featured an upgraded suspension, lowered ride height, specially valved Delco - Bilstein shocks, larger diameter sway bars, a steering/frame brace known as the wonder bar, a special decal package, and the optional Tuned Port Injection system, taken from the Corvette. It also shared the Corvette's Goodyear Gatorback unidirectional tires, but in a 245/50/VR16 size vs. the Corvette's 255/50/VR16. It also received aluminum five-spoke 16" x 8" wheels. It ran the quarter-mile in an impressive-for-its-time 15.0 seconds. Yellow Camaro THE FOURTH-GEN LINK: 1996 CAMARO SS The popular SS package, not seen since 1972, was resurrected, and welcomed with eager arms by enthusiasts. This reimagined SS featured a 305 hp engine, special hood with functional scoop and forced induction, retooled rear spoiler, revised suspension, Corvette-style wheels and special badging. The second-coming of the Camaro SS ran the quarter-mile time in 13.6 seconds. http://emails.generalmotors.com/r/r?...%5f%5fSfQNbA00 |

yup that is true, it took a very long time for the design department to get over the emissions hurdles

They left out a lot of v8 motors....what you show are primarily small blocks...no big blocks...

Technology these days is skyrocketing. It's no big surprise V6s are putting out power that puts some old V8s to shame, but that's what happens as technology improves. I don't think your info includes ALL V8 motors, as 90503 mentioned. Wiki information to follow: 1967–1969 L35 SS396 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 325 hp (242 kW) @ 4800 rpm, 410 lb·ft (556 N·m) @ 3200 rpm 1968–1969 L34 SS396 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 350 hp (261 kW) @ 5200 rpm, 415 lb·ft (563 N·m) @ 3200 rpm 1967–1969 L78 SS396 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 375 hp (280 kW) @ 5600 rpm, 415 lb·ft (563 N·m) @ 3600 rpm 1968–1969 L89 aluminum cylinder head option for the L78 SS396/375 engine - lightened the engine by ~100 lb (45 kg). 1969 COPO 9561/L72 427 cu in (7.0 L) V8 425 hp (317 kW) @ 5600 rpm, 460 lb·ft (624 N·m) @ 4000 rpm 1969 COPO 9560/ZL1 427 cu in (7.0 L) V8 430 hp (321 kW) @ 5200 rpm, 450 lb·ft (610 N·m) @ 4400 rpm Taken from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrol...st_generation)

2010 LS
My first Camaro was a 68 327, 4 speed @ 275 HP. Had to put traction bars on to prevent wheel hop, differential would slam into the floor pan red line was 6,000 RPM dumped the clutch many times at max. it was pretty fun and fast in a straight line but not much for handling.
Love my 2010 LS as much fun as a small block V8 from the 60's have driven quite a few in my 37 years driving. |

Pretty sure the LS1 in the 4th gen put out more than the current V6.
And I can guarantee you, one of those will outrun your V6.

Look at the torque differences in the V8's vs V6. That will tell the story.

Lets not turn this into another V6 versus V8 pissing match...which is probably where it will go. To the OP...yes today's V6 makes more HP than a good portion of the past V8s, in fact it dwarfs the HP output of some of them. But remember there is much more to a car than HP....but talking strictly HP output and nothing else...it does quite well.

Long answer: No. Keep in mind, the torque numbers will never agree, even if the HP numbers are larger. Cant compare mid-high 200's to low 400's :( And I know not all of the old v8's (SBC or BBC alike) made over 400 lb/ft, but still... something to consider. Yes, mechanical advances are cool and all, and she moves. But she is still only a big fish in a little pond. EDIT: Quote:

Just a tiny change to how you phrased it, then you won't get everyone going into semantics here...

No it does not make more power than all of the previous V8's. There's a few first gens that did but I don't know all the motors an combinations.
Off the top of my head the 01-02 SS's and WS6's were rated at 325 from the factory, and the Z-28, Trans Am, and Formula were 315. It's a well known fact all of the LS1 powered F-body's were underrated. For example ndtguy just dynoed his 01 at 308rwhp and 324rwtq bone stock.
