Why is the top speed so low ??
I dont understand why everybody supposes a high speed of maximum 180 or 185mph from the ZL1 ..
because a german manufacturer tuned a Camaro SS now it has 528hp, 516lb-ft and has a top speed of 340kmh (0-60 in 4.5s) The ZL1 has much more power and should just reach 180mph ? |

the SLP camaro does 0-60 in the mid 3 sec range.
the Top speed is limited by the Manufacturer. If you wanna go faster you can tune out that limiter and go way past 180mph. I think the MTI built camaro ran 200mph or more on the Texas Mile. |

Yes. But the top speed is also limited by what tires the car comes with.

Aero Gearing Cooling Stability Many other system validations, i.e. wheels, hubs, driveshaft, window glass, hood latch, roof bonding... Lots more than just tires come into play when designing/testing/validating for a top speed. Will the wind even allow that aero shape to go that fast at that power level/gearing? If so, now every system must be validated to handle it... The 200 mph car at texas was not stock aero, and monster hp. And zero durability, or validation for those speeds... A one off bonzai run of a modded car vs validating a production car for a top speed is apples and oranges. |

MTI camaro ran 244, it took 1,800+ horsepower to do it.
What's the published top speed from GM? I haven't seen it.

I know it's more complicated than just the tires. I was just trying to bring attention to. The fact that tires have speed ratings.

I didn't know we have an official top speed yet, aside from the 5th gear run from the 'Ring...

I know the stock '10's can do 155mph (proved it somewhere in texas.) with no problems.
Tires is probably what will hold you back from going any faster. I think the car (stock) can handle the 180mph on the odo no problem if theres enough space to legally do it. |

It's the gearing, it seems GM geared the ZL1 more for acceleration than super top speed. The car weighs 4120lbs, I think gm made the correct choice..... Acceleration > Super high top speed.
Edit: keep in mind the GT500 is electronically limited to 155mph, also how often do one go faster than 175mph on a road course or drag strip. |

I went off the gears / tires provided in the order guide and came up with the following "theoretical" top speeds for each gear. The 6th gear is definitely limited by aerodynamics but it might pull higher than 5th...
mph: 1st 51.1 2nd 76.3 3rd 104.5 4th 135.9 5th 169.9 6th 215.7 kmh: 1st 82.2 2nd 122.9 3rd 168.2 4th 218.7 5th 273.4 6th 347.2 Definitely needs a ton more hp to reach the limiter in 6th but it should be a great gas saving gear with only 1470rpm at 75mph... |
