Under hood insulation removal?

It may be just as simple as it looks, but how do I safely remove the heat shield under the hood? Also, is it all painted (I know it's not cleared) under there? And how much does it increase engine noise?

It is simple. Just pop off the plastic plugs. Easiest with a panel removal tool.

I just took two fingers under the edge and placed my thumb in the center of the retainer and pulled the retainers out.

What are the pros and cons for removing the top part of the heat shield?

It acts as a blanket to smother a fire but if something goes wrong with your fuel system, it won't help.

Basically it's to absorb sound, you may notice the clicking sounds of the injectors more or if you have a CAI the woosh of the air intake more but it won't hurt anything to remove it. One thing is it cleans up the under hood appearance too.
