Help. Engine Anomaly?
2010 2SS
So, I just got a check engine light and a brief (like 1 sec) engine cut out. I just changed my spark plugs and plug wires (and oil change) at 100,120 miles. The car has 100,800 miles now. The old plugs had 3 that the electrode tip was mostly burned away but all the plugs look fine and consistent. After the change I have noticed once in a while maybe a little miss but since the car has had a slight rough idle since new, I didn't think too much about it until today. I was driving on the freeway at 70 in cruise control when it started to noticeably miss for several seconds and then the real brief cut out. I moved to the right lane and slowed down in case it died but then it was running fine. The check engine light did come on. I completed my trip 40 miles or so and got back home to my scan tool. At first it reported no codes so I shut everything down and disconnected. I tried again and this time I got a P0102 code. Any idea what happened since the car is running fine again and no new code after clearing the P0102? Thanks. |

Being that the code has to do with the MAF sensor, did you do anything with the intake?

No, all I did was change oil, plugs and plug wires. There has never been an issue with the car in 100,000 miles except to replace the A/C compressor due to a leak and the front right wheel bearing replacement.

What plug wires did you use? Did you get a real snap on feeling when you put them all on because I know it's kind of hard sometimes to get them fully seated.

You might have a bad MAF maybe the previous owner had an aftermarket filter on it and over oiled it.
The MAF is cheap enough Rock Auto has them for $80cnd so its about $50 usd for a genuine gm MAF https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...t=5128&jsn=701

I bought the car with 2,000 miles on it so I am really the only owner of the car and it has never had a problem before. I guess the MAF could be going bad and only a coincidence that it happened right after the oil change etc.. I did make sure I got a snap plugging the wires on.

Always the chance that a small piece of trash got hung up on the maf sensor opening. Had you checked your air filter any time before this happened? Or confirmed it is seated correctly after it happened?

Well, brain fade here. I did replace the air filter at the same time. In the bottom of the air box was what looked like a dry bee mud nest. I cleaned that all out before putting the new filter in place. So, it should have been cleaner air than what was getting in before that. I assume the MAF is downstream from the filter.

But you might have let something slip through, stuck to the inside of the filter or something when it was reinstalled. The opening in the maf sensor is very small, with a wire in the middle of it, so it only takes a speck to get stuck for a few seconds to throw the code. Cut the car off, the speck drops free and sucks through the engine next time the car is started. No way of knowing this is what was the problem, but I wouldn't worry about it until it happens again. And then I would clean the maf and try again. Until the problem becomes constant or at least frequent, you will have trouble figuring out anything anyway. The only other real option would be to check with a scanner and see if freeze frame data tells you anything when the code sets again.

Now I have really done it!!! I drove it for about 2 miles and it did the quick miss, threw the code and then ran reasonably well. It set for a couple of days and a friend brought over a more advanced code reader (Foxwell OBDII/EOBD). It at first wouldn't show the code so I went to live data. The MAF sensor seemed to be reading 0.00 lbs/s.. So, I tried to read the codes again and it came up with P0102 again. Assuming the MAF is bad, I cleared the codes and immediately the car died. It will start and then immediately dies now. So, I killed it.... That is weird that clearing the codes now causes it to die immediately after starting.. I guess I will go get a new MAF sensor.

Before purchasing a new MAF, get some cleaner, pull it out of the air intake pipe, and spray it off really well…One connector and two screws if I remember correctly…

I would also try cleaning it first. Also, check the gasket for a tear & if you are running a stock air box double check that the clips are completely snapped on the tabs. Here is a thread on how to check the wiring as well.

Well, I finally found the problem. The wiring from the sensor is supposed to be held up by a plastic wire clip. It came loose and the wire rubbed on the pulley below it. The black/white stripe wire wore completely through and the blue wire is almost all the way through. I moved my car closer to the shop so I can solder in new wire splices and while moving it I got the Service Stabiltrack System message. Based upon my reading it says a misfire can cause that. So, I think with the MAF not working I got a misfire while moving the car yesterday so will see if that message clears up after getting the MAF working again.
