Vvt or not to vvt.. that is the question.
Keep VVT or swap to 3 bolt setup? I really like the idea of keeping vvt, and programming for it to function in my favor, not favoring the epa (like the factory tune indicates). It also seems that a few years ago companies like gpi (for one) favored keeping VVT cam setups, and adjusting tuning accordingly. It seems to me that the tides have turned and those who are “in the know” are favoring 3-bolt stuff (which doesn’t have VVT).. I always assumed that the VVT would become generally adopted at some point.. and the results would end up adding power up too and down low, because the theory makes perfect sense.. soooo what are y’all’s thoughts on this? Wouldn’t it be reasonable to assume that vvt could only help if controlled accordingly? And shouldn’t an engine with a functional and we’ll tuned vvt system be able to out-perform an engine with no valve timing adjustment?

Btw, Car is mostly stock L99 with agp TT kit around 8-10 lbs. DOD fully deleted, using L9H VvT cam currently. But this threads intent is to gain yalls perspective.. so let me know your thoughts on this.. even if you don’t have a specific recommendation in my case.. thanks for years of support and information! I Love this forum

3 bolt seems to be superior and most shops don’t even do vvt anymore. There are still some die hard vvt people out there and it works for them, but you have twins already so go 3 bolt.

Some people will tell you to to dump it, lol. Keep it, just have a tuner that knows how to tune it.

The variable cam timing can be a big advantage if tuned properly. Contact a tuner that knows what they are doing with them and you cant beat um. I used Gwenty performance. Phone calls are freeeee.

ok, so it looks like everyone is giving a direct opinion but not explaining WHY.
VVT IMO is a great cam selection if you are a street and strip car that sees alot of stop and go traffic. It has a wider powerband and you will make power and torque earlier. This is great because you arent constantly racing a car like this its a street warrior. 3 Bolt has advantages of making more utmost power at the top of the powerband, like when racing. You will have more cam selections with 3 bolt and there are alot more tuners comfortable and knowledgeable to tune it properly. In a setup with twins, i assume you spec the turbo size appropriately you should make TONS of power early and imo i would go 3 bolt for cam selection and better top end power with a 3 bolt, but this is because you are twin turbo. If this was just a bolton n/a allmotor setup a VVT will feel faster and i think SBE VVT is at the top in terms of quickest cars. When we start talking boost i think most people 3bolt conversion for simplicity and more top end power. |

TT you don't really need the added benefit of the VVT in my opinion. if you were NA it makes a bigger difference. While it will still be better performance wise you just don't need it. Many shops get rid of it as it is harder to tune, more things to go wrong. The more moving parts in the equation the more weak points. AFM definitely get rid of though failures all day long with that. I am fairly certain you can dump the AFM and keep the VVT if you like though. Not 100% sure as I never had either being an LS3.

I already got rid of the arm. Cam that is currently in the car is a oem L9h cam. Vvt, no AFM.
