Oil cooler adapter

I've been thinking about a proper oil cooler for a long time.
I found out that it doesn't take much work to overheat the engine oil.



Which adapter is better for installing an additional engine oil cooler?
Keep the OEM oil cooler and add a sandwich between engine and oil filter or remove the OEM oil cooler and use an adapter and attach it to that?

They easier way would get a kit like the Mishimoto oil cooler kit. They are relatively affordable.
It uses a sandwich plate on the oil filter location making the install pretty easy.
No need to remove the factory oil cooler system, so you technically have 2 oil cooling systems working at the same time.
If you do a lot of track time, the Mishi kit will get a bit overwhelmed.

Now, the best option for really bringing the oil temps down is a kit like the one from Improved Racing where it deletes the factory oil cooler system and replaces it with block similar to the one you have pictured and a much larger heat exchanger.

Those sandwich plates only have 1/8 NPT fittings which is not a lot of flow. I'm not sure what size those AN fittings are, but you definitely want some flow.

Yeah the mishitmoto cooler comes with 10 an lines with comes out to 5/8", so quite a bigger then 1/8". I would agree with CamaroCracka I would want as big of a line and fittings as possible.

The mishi kits are a lot. I've been looking online, and I've seen the fittings/stainless hose/oil cooler for 150$. Just need the sandwich plate. Probably get away with everything at 300$.

Thank you for the offer. But since I'm not from the states, I'll order it here in Europe.


If I add mainly our local taxes to the price of the parts, the resulting price climbs into nonsense.

I was thinking along the same lines as you.
Keep the factory cooler and add another one.
But I wasn't sure if it wouldn't affect something.


I don't go on the track at all.
I'm more concerned with thermal relief with oil and a better look to the thermometer.


I have noticed that as soon as the oil starts to overheat so that the temperature drops, the engine has to shut down. The OEM cooler is just too small for it.

This is something that has been discussed at great lengths. The OEM "OIL COOLER" is for emissions purposes and brings your cars oil up to temperature. For a performance application and depending on the purpose the cars used for, an aftermarket cooler set up can be great.

With that said let's answer your original question. None of those options are worth anything. They are both cheap China crap. (what is shown in pic) If you want something that good quality and works check Derale. The second pic in your post would be the style I recommend.

Got it the best way would be the second design style replace the oil cooler with an actual cooler but from a reputable company so its high quality and no issues. Depending on the brand, you can get them with a thermostat in them as well but not needed just another option they offer.
