2012 v6 reluctor wheel skipped teeth

I have been having a idle issue for about 3 or 4 months where the idle would surge on a startup for about 10 to 15 seconds or so. go from 600-1200-600-1200 and then eventually come down and level out.. after that I got the codes p0016 p0017 p0018 p0019 so I checked the codes and found out that is could be timing chain stretch.. so I had the mechanic replace my timing chains, but that weird idle was still there, the codes returned about 150 miles later so I brought it back.

mechanic just called me and told me the reluctor wheel has skipped 2 teeth. He said he has seen some tsb's that show some that have skipped three teeth. He is telling me in order to fix this issue he has to drop the subframe remove the timing cover again and pull the crank to replace/re-position the reluctor wheel. Can I drive the car like this without it be doing any engine damage. What happens if it skips more teeth, and what caused this to happen?

It does not skip teeth, it slips. It is an interference fit onto the crank, and presses
on. The fix is a set-screw, but I don't think you can do it with the crank in the motor.
The set screw fastens the reluctor wheel to the counter balance weight on the crank.

Jasper has a kit that has an alignment jig, that assures the proper position of the
reluctor wheel, and a guide for the drill bit, and a setscrew.

The question is less of how to fix it, (crank out, new wheel, weld into place) than why did it happen. I went through the same issue a little while back. I'm heavily modded so it took a while to track it down but for this to happen on a stock application is weird to say the least. AlanRubin is right. It's an interference fit and slips on the crank. Typically this happens when adding boost like a turbo or supercharger although turbos are more common because of the way the power is delivered (big hit as opposed to linear like a supercharger).

You need to determine why it spun or it most likely will do it again. In my case the crank had never been finish balanced. Don't ask me how we figured that but know it took countless hours and cross-referencing the codes from the crank all the way back to the manufacturer. On a stock crank the likelihood of this being the case is near 0 but if the crank comes out, which it will need to, it behooves you to get it checked for balance.

I wonder why GM didn't stake the reluctor wheel on the crank? For something so important just being slip fit on the crank sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Not just GM. I had a reluctor wheel on a brand new Eagle stroker crank out of sync.

Is this also common on V6 3.6 engines? i probably had the same issue. How is the replacement exactly?

Believe it or not its possible to fix it in the car but its not easy. Probably just faster to pull the engine, line it back up then drill and tap it or tack weld it. Shame they won't cover it out of warranty.

Line it back up and stake it. Not as easy as it sounds for sure.
