VVT or LS3 Conversion.
Hello all. I don’t post a lot but I do read up a lot on this site. It’s awesome. I would like to upgrade performance wise on my car. I have the regular bolt ons now. Headers, x pipe, 160 degree thermostat, and cold air intake. What’s your take on keeping VVT or doing the LS3 conversion. Some say keep the VVT but if you don’t have a tuner close by in the area go LS3 conversion. Any thoughts would be great.

I would consult your tuner first but generally speaking the VVT cams make a great power band. If you aren't going for an all out monster build the VVT can give you solid power gains through a wider rpm range. And the peak power gains are nothing to sneeze at either.

I had a GPI VVT SS1 cam, ported heads, and FI (ADM LSA conversion), with E85 and ported blower, 681 RWHP, 636 RWTQ — nothing to sneeze at!

Thanks. Did you do the work yourself and then get your car tuned remotely through GPI?

I didn’t go a far as Don, but I do have GPI’s SS1 VVT cam, ported and milled heads, Circle D stall converter and some bolt ons. I installed everything myself and GPI sent a remote tune to get me started, then I drove to their shop for a dyno and street tune. They’re only 3.5 hrs from me so it was worth it. I’ve heard that they do great remote tuning as well.

I did the LS3 conversion some time ago before there were a lot a VVT cams to choose from. I'm making 435rwhp with cam and bolt ons. If I was going to do it today, I would go with a VVT cam.

Why do you say that ? I am in the process of doing a ls3 conversion . My install guy was planning on doing a VVT & DOD delete .

I did the VVT/DOD delete a while back on my car.It ran great.Simple to do.But now with the new VVT cam profiles and technology.I probably would have went that route. Now that we know how it works. If you check the top fastest N/A cars in this forum, most of them are VVT.
As for tuning, and if you need parts, you can check with CCPerf in Waterloo which is not that far from you, I think.

I had multiple shops tell me vvt was horrible and they wouldn’t touch it. I looked at the 1/4 mile fast list and it’s all vvt cam cars. I decided to go with the vvt cam. Lot of “reputable” tuners don’t want to change their ways of thinking and will push you towards what they want to do.
