Painted the "Shark Fin"

I painted the XM/Onstar antenna to match my car.

Ordered a new antenna from www.gmpartsdirect.com for $44 shipped. Part # 92239705

Here is what you will need:

Mask, sand and clean...

Paint with adhesion promoter...2 light coats, then 1 medium coat.

Then paint with primer, again 2 light coats and 1 medium coat.

Wet sand with 600 grit W/D sandpaper until it is smooth.

Dry, clean and prime it again, 2 light coats and 1 medium coat.

Time for a few color coats...wet sand lightly with 1000 grit W/D and apply several light coats of clear.

On to installation..

Move the seats forward and fold down the back seat. Protect surfaces that need it...

Tools needed: 8 and 10 mm 1/4" scocket and ratchet, panel tool, upholstry tool and a small flat bladed screwdriver.

Remove the bolt cover from both clothes hangers.

Use the 8 mm socket to remove the bolts and pull hard to remove the hanger retainers.

Remove the two headliner retainers with the panel tool very carefully.

Use the upholstry tool to remove the C-pillar covers. They also cover the rear portion of the side curtain airbags and have very good connectors. You can let them both hang by the black plastic strap that is supposed to keep them from becoming projectiles when the side air bags go off.

Carefully lower the headliner, pulling it out of the B-pillar plastic and forward to the middle of the doors.

This is what you will see above the back edge of the lowered headliner.

Remove the 10 mm bolt and 4 prong antenna retainer and disconnect teh two antenna leads.

Remove the black antenna.

Apply some wax while you have a chance.

Remove the 10 mm bolt and 4 pronged retainer from your freshly painted shark fin and feed the antenna leads through the hole.

Go back inside the car and reverse the steps you took to remove the antenna.

Admire your handiwork.

It matches the other painted plastic on the car (bumper covers, mirrors, etc) perfectly. For some reason all of the Summit White painted plastic looks a little "warmer" in color than the painted metal. I think it has to do with the texture of the plastic and how it reflects the light versus the smoothness of the painted metal areas.

I kinda do. Was thinking of painting mine on the car. I am not crazy about taking the inside of my car apart though. It is still as stock as the day it was built.

What prevents water from getting underneath the antenna and into the car? I've been looking at the pictures and can't see how it seals.

Looks like that black gasket in the 3rd and 4th pictures.

Looks great.

I also had this done today. I had ordered a new XM antenna last tuesday from Becky at Rogers Chevrolet and recieved it on friday. Monday I made an appoitment at the local dealership "Desert Auto Plaza" to have the antenna installed. I did not want to mess anything up in my car so I decided to pay to have it done. It was a little more then I expected to pay, the flip side is that it was done correctly and if I have any problems they will have to fix them. I am very happy with the results and I will be posting pictures within the next two days. By the way my car is Red Jewel Tint.
