Trying to track down my old Camaro

So I haven't been on here in a while, but long story short I had to sell my 2010 1SS yellow Camaro to put myself through school years back. I traded it in to Dimmit Chevrolet in Palm Harbor.

Won't the dealer tell you who they sold it to?

The dealer won't release the info to me. And I ran a vin check and it shows that a third owner now purchased the vehicle.

A dealership can’t release ANY owners information-

Mostly to protect previous owners from harassed, which is the opposite of what your trying to gs13 - most people would use that information to do exact what ‘carfax’ does, finding out previous history of the car (accident, number of owners, was the car totaled, crashed, salvage etc), unfortunately most people after they trade their car I honestly never want to hear about again.

I’m trying to reach my original owner (I’m the 2nd) hoping ‘they’ would be kind enough to help me get a copy of the window sticker - which has to be done by the selling dealer and the original purchaser (even if they hold no interest in the car anymore) I believe the car was originally from New Jersey: 2G1FT30W9C9193379

If you know what ‘state’ Is registered in you can contact the TAX COLLECTER - DMV and see if they will give you that information (probably not) or if you happen to know someone in law enforcement with access to they ‘AP’ system (national data base) your could ask ?

During my LEO years I often came upon either hot or abandoned vehicles that had no plates. Only identification was the VIN. Dispatch would do a VIN search and give me the entire history of the vehicle including the latest owner. If the third owner recently purchased the vehicle, last 90-120 days the current registration may not be DMV files yet. Many small town throughout the US also registers vehicles and can be a tad slow in forwarding the paperwork to State DMV. Being you have the VIN and description you will find it in time.

Thanks fellas. Yeah I really loved the car, and if it wasn't for law school I wouldn't have sold it. But I really want to buy the car back if its still in good condition, ill keep everyone up to date.

You could always ask the dealer to contact the owner and give them your info...

Who knows, they may be able to put him in a newer Camaro ;o)

It's a privacy law.
Your personal data doesn't belong to the vehicle, and that's a good thing.

You sold it, it's gone, look for another like it.

Maybe as an LEO you are qualified to get the info, but I hope a private party cannot without just cause.


I sold a junker once to a neighbor. He was crying he had no money and needed something, and I really had no use for it. We signed some hand drawn papers and he gave me a down-payment.

My imagination didn't lead me to believe that he was probably just going to take the plates off his dead car and put them on my old car.

So I went to the DMV and paid the fee to transfer the title to his name. I wanted to protect myself.
The clerk said, "It's usually up to the buyer to transfer the title." I asked, "What if he doesn't?"

That was one of the best moves I ever made in my life.
Two years later he abandoned the car after a wreck. His ex called me to tell me it was in the impound lot, she didn't know where he was, and if I wanted it back I could pay the fees. It had never been registered in his name. The fees for the tow and impound were more than I sold the car for, and it was trashed.
I didn't have to wonder what the outcome would have been if I hadn't transferred the title.
