the only time you have too much power is when you are breaking the wheels loose at idle.

b
O.K., let me see if I can say this right........

Your quote from Bob is correct, that is what he said. My interpretation that he may have confused the engines is that they are both the same engine, both 3.6 liter displacement, both with 4 overhead cams, 24 valves, and variable timing and lift. The engine with standard fuel injection delivery is rated at 260 hp (which is the standard engine in the Cadillac CTS). The direct inject version, which is the optional engine in the CTS, is rated at 300. Bob may have gotten the DI and non-DI engines mixed up when he was talking, saying the Camaro will have 260-ish hp. That would mean one of three things:

1. The Camaro will be getting the standard 3.6 and NOT the DI'd version (which could happen, but is very doubtfull).

2. GM has inexplicably decided to detune a direct inject 3.6 to "260-ish" hp for the Camaro application, instead of just using the standard 3.6 (they must be dillusional if they do).

or (and the most logical explanation)

3. Bob got his DI and non-DI lingo mixed up. I mean, he's still a brilliant guy, but I'm sure even Einstein got some minor details mixed up when he pushed 75 years old.

Bob Lutz is the head of the effing company folks. He's not Scott (fbodfather) he's not on the factory floor, he's not R&D...he's the boss' boss' boss. It's not only believable that a CEO messes up some technical jargon, it's EXPECTED. Hell if my superiors made it through a presentation without completing screwing up the teechnical data we gave them, I'd be out of a job.

Anything could happen...

South Africans think it'll be detuned -

"The lighter 3.6-litre V6 engine is rumoured to endow the entry level Camaro model with near perfect 50/50 weight distribution, ensuring engaging driving dynamics.

The engine is sourced from the acclaimed Cadillac CTS, although it has been detuned from the 225kW it produces in the Caddy to ensure better (fuel) consumption in the Camaro application. "

And these people: (The entire world is mis-led if this is wrong) Could happen.

"GM plans V8 and V6 versions of the Camaro coupe and convertible. The V6 version will be powered by the same engine used in the Cadillac CTS, a direct-injection, 3.6-litre quad-cam unit rated at 225kW.

But it would be detuned in the Camaro to deliver around 195kW and fuel usage of about 12 litres/100km (24mpg).

Those fuel figures would put the Camaro among best in class for a US performance car, he said."

You can always slow down if necessary, but there's nothing you can do when you run out of power..

On more thing, I think the v6 Camaro may be the best "bang for the buck" when factoring in mpg, performance for the $ blah, blah and so on..

...but the BEST Camaro will be the sinister one that wakes the neighbors, scares your pasengers and smokes the tires until you lift. As Dennis Miller used to say, that's just my opinion...

well I dont see nothing wrong with the detune engine, challengers V6's are 250 bhp, what the hells is the v6 mustang bhp @_@, and the camaro's v6's bhp is in the 260's maybe they want the v6 to stay in the same league as the other ponies, and I have a logical reason why they probally dont want the DI V6 caddy engine in the camaro cause, they dont want the DI v6 camaro to steal the caddy V6 sales

If I was CEO I would do the same

There are only two things I would add/change:
It will handle brilliantly due to it's 50/50 distribution of it's relatively low weight.

And while quoting EPA ratings for the engine in as it is in the CTS, he didn't account for the estimated 300 lbs weight loss. (That's what I meant by conservative estimates) I think the fuel economy will go up just slightly in the Camaro.
GIVE ME MY V6 MANUAL NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! green please?!?!?!?

One thing to note however, my wifes 08 CTS DI V6 does not get the gas mileage they say, it is much worse. The smaller V6 did get much better gas mileage, might be the better choice in these $4.00/gal gas prices

To me, it simply doesn't make sense that the Camaro would get the least powerful version of this engine. Caddy can have the most power, I'm fine with that. But the most common variant is the 280 hp one found in the lambas. I can't imagine GM taking another 20 ponies off for the Camaro for better fuel economy. That being said, it is probably better for all of us to believe the lowest power numbers that we are given, at least as a place holder. Then we can be pleasantly surprised when they turn out to be 10% under the actual rating.

I hear ya - only time will tell for sure.

Another angle is I'm getting the mid-level car (V8) because it looks like the fuel mileage is going to be close between V6 and V8. With AFM the V8 is relatively efficient. (G8 GT is rated at 24mpg hwy., V6 25mpg hwy)

Then there's our old friend Mr. Torque. The DI V6 in the Cadillac only has 273 lbs/ft of torque. I want that 400hp and near 400lbs/ft of torque. The G8 GT is sold out right now, they have V6's sitting around by the thousands. Of course it's not the DI V6...

So, we have come down to just two engine choices at launch. The detuned 3.6 and a LS3. To me that just don't sound right.

No it doesn't. When did the L76 get counted out? And careful with the 3.6, because of DI/non DI thing. We have pretty much ditched the idea of the non-DI 3.6, I think. But as far as having only 2 engine choices at launch, that sounds right to me. We've always been led to believe that the top dog will be released about the same time as the vert, roughly 6 months after the V6 and base V8 go on sale. And we haven't heard anything recently saying there will be more than 3 models.
