Cleanning The Top!!!!

Did I miss the section in the book, or did I not read it? How do you clean the convertible top? I mean the best way and not funny answers but funny answers are ok too.

I have used Simple G.reen for years on all my tops. Spray on, let sit for a minute or 2, scrub with a sponge and wash off. Works well over the past 12 years. Never harmed any ragtop so far.

On my 69, 95 Firebird, and both 2012 convertibles, the only thing I ever did was hit it with water from a pressure nozzle. No need for soap and all that other crap. Just get the dirt, dust, etc. off of it. Now, I bought a Convertible to drive with the top down and the only time it is up is when it is the garage parked.

Agreed on the Simple Green...and gently scrub with a sponge (no stiff brushes) only if you have bird poop or bug jerky.

Let the top dry naturally in the air. Don't use a leaf blower (many do )
It can force moisture deep into the fabric.

I stay away from bottled commercial top cleaners...which are IMHO too strong and caustic, despite their claims otherwise. Most expect you to use their "sealant" afterwards. Not I.

If you have a tan top, don't worry about it looking "dark" when you wash it. It will dry to its natural light brightness. I pooped a brick the first time I cleaned my oak Corvette top. It got dark and I thought I had ruined it.

GM's claim is soapy water.

But I just hit it with water. I had some fuzz on there one time and I used one of those sticky lint rollers (3M) and it worked great.

The most popular brands are "303 ®" and "Ragg Topp ®"...but this is not a personal endorsement.

Get the 303 kit at Amazon for $25. Comes with a cleaner and a water repellent. You may also want to pick up a soft brush. Amazon has those as well.

All I've ever used with previous canvas tops was soap and water and I've never had a problem. If there is an area that is dirtier or stained, the "approved" cleaners can be used as directed. I haven't even washed the top on my 2012 yet. I'm kinda scared to open that can of worms, but it's a garage queen anyway, so all I've done so far was use a roller style lint brush to remove dust and light debris and then I applied the 303 protectant. Still looks pretty good so far.

I just used the 303 cleaner and protectant on Friday. Did a nice job cleaning the top. Haven't had a chance to see how well the water beads from the protectant. Will probably have to wait until the next washing since my car is your typical garage queen.

Be sure to heed the directions on the protectant about avoiding overspray on areas other than the top. I purchased some plastic plastic paint drop-clothes and used them to cover the windows, trunk, hood and side areas before applying the protectant.
