Real CF stripe project

When I got my ZL1 hood a while back I started thinking how good it would look if I did a ZL1 style stripe but in real CF. So I started buying parts here and there. I got the roof about a year ago and then got a CF spoiler and trunk lid.

I had a problem finding a good painter to do the work for me and although I have done paint and body work in the past I really wanted this to be better than I could do.

I finally got the number to the painter of a custom shop here and he agreed to do the work for me.

It is still a work in progress but I wanted to share the pics of the roof painted that he sent me a little bit ago since I am too excited not to share lol.

First pic is when he put the roof skin on. He sprayed it with 3 layers of clear and used that as a "primer" so he could block sand it and get it smooth. The pic is after the block sanding. The rest of the pics are of the roof after painting the sides of the roof and clearing the entire thing. Once it dries he will block it down so you will not be able to feel the lines.

I will update the thread with more pics in the coming weeks. I am waiting for a new trunk lid to come in and he is repainting the hood and front bumper to fix the last painters mistakes so it will still be a little bit before it is done.

I was hoping to have pics of the trunk and spoiler by now but he didnt take any when he painted and now they are sanded and ready for another coat of clear.

He sent a pic of the roof buffed (1 step of 3 he said) and one of the pics shows the trunk painted (though sanded). Figured I would post them anyway. He said it should be close to being finished this weekend so I am hoping to have it next week.

The back of the trunk is straight like that because I do not want any CF showing on the backside of the spoiler like the factory ZL1 stripe.

I love seeing quality custom work like this. This is twice now you have impressed me with your ideas.

Are these (OEM) roofs fully glued or is there spot welding or riveting as well? This new one is all glue I imagine?

They are spot welded on all 4 sides and the entire support structure has a foam type glue that attaches it and insulates it from vibration.

The CF one has 3M panel bond, 16 rivets, seam sealer and new foam stuff on the support structures. Honestly with this panel bond stuff it really didnt need rivets but I like overkill sometimes.

He was able to remove the old roof panel without harming it. I will get a pic of it tomorrow to see how many spot welds it had. It is hanging on my garage wall lol.

I really hate not doing the work myself but I really wanted it to be as close to perfect as it could be so I am glad I found this guy. Plus I have 0 time right now so it may have been another year or two before I could get to it.

I got so busy last week I forgot to share the old roof skin pics so putting them below.

Update on my car. They have the front windshield and rear glass installed and he said he would be painting the bumper and hood as well as re-clearing the trunk and spoiler Sunday (yesterday). I have not gotten a new pic so I am not sure if he had a chance to do it or not. He said that it should be able to be put together this Friday so I am hopeful of that. I got to see it Friday because he wanted me to pick up my old trunk he used as a stencil for the spoiler holes on the new trunk. Pictures do not do it justice, man it looked so good in person...I am excited.

Anyway here are the pics of the old roof panel so you can see where the spot welds were and also a pic of the bottom to see where the foam stuff was.

Well I still haven't gotten my car back but it is almost finished.

I got a couple of pics last night so I thought I would share. He said there is still a little more buffing that needs to be done but I should be able to get it Friday.

Below are the pics he sent.

below you can see that the red doesn't show on this side and the stripe goes up on the spoiler without interruption.

And below here you can see that there is no CF on the back since it all stops under the spoiler (like the factory ZL1 stripe).
