6L50 temp measurement w/o gauge

I’ve got a 2013 LFX and a 6L50 trans in my 66 Chevelle and I don’t have a trans temp gauge. I use my temp gun on the outside of the pan when checking the level but think a probe in the fluid (pan) would probably be better.
I can’t put a deep-sump pan with a drain/temp port in it because I’m already borderline too low.
I have a separate trans cooler in front of the radiator. The last 12” connection to the supply/return at the cooler is rubber. Do you think I would get accurate readings if I added a brass tee (hose x hose x 1/8 pipe) fitting and measured the temp at the cooler?
Should I measure before or after it’s cooled?
Thanks
