2010 SS Camaro vs a 1991 GMC Syclone...
My friend is trying to tell me that a stock 1991 GMC V-6 Turbo Syclone (stock) can beat a 2010 SS Camaro (stock) based on youtube videos. The youtube video says stock but i hardly doubt it. Has anyone drove both of these vehicles. Because I believe he is full of crap. Attached is the two youtube videos he is basing it off of.

the Sy/Ty duo were impressive beasts. However, even if you could find one in perfect condition the SS would have the edge by a few tenths. But after the better part of 20 years that engine won't be as powerful as it was when new. It would have hung with the SS to 60 but it would lose ground from then on.

I think the Sy's 0-60 in the 5-5.5 second range. So the camaro is quicker.'
The Sy's are monsters off the line but the still only have 280hp. |

I rember back when they came out and one mag was saying 0-60 in 4.6
Just checked wiki.... "The Syclone, when new, was capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds and could do a quarter-mile run in 13.4 seconds at 98 mph " I still love that truck !

yep that is correct, 0-60 in 4.6 seconds. The Typhoon had AWD as well. If you do happen to see one lurking around, chances are it has had an engine rebuild or there are not that many miles on it anyway.

For many enthusiasts the 1991 Syclone has been a wet dream-literally.GMC transformed its smallest vehicles into quick and nimble performance trucks.

Was the Syclone or Lighting introduced first? Pretty sure it was the Syclone right?

I think there was a late 80's Lightning with a 240hp 5.8L V8 good for high 6 or low 7's to 60. A buddy of mine had one, but I just can't remember what year it was. It came from the factory with traction bars on the solid rear axle, and it was pretty hard to break traction with those things. It actually handled pretty well too. Syclone would smoke it obviously.

1993 I believe was the first year for the Lightning. Easily confused for an 80's model since Ford used the same body style from the early 80's though 1996, with only slight front clip changes. I had a buddy buy one when they first came out and while quick, they wouldn't touch a Syclone or Typhoon.

I drove a Syclone...
I had a Syclone demo one summer when they first came out. It was most definitely very quick. I remember pulling up next to a brand new Dodge Stealth R/T at a light and he was in my rear view mirror from about 50' on to the next light. You could stand on the brakes hard and run the boost up to 5-6 psi on the dash gauge and all four tires would break loose, it would skid sideways a couple of inches and when you let off the brakes, that little truck would accellerate so fast it took your breath away. Everybody wanted to trade me cars for the weekends including the owner. I turned it in when we got a couple feet of snow one weekend for something with more ground clearance.
I haven't driven the new Camaro SS yet, so I couldn't tell you which one was quicker....mine is in town, so I'll get to try it soon. I can give you an 'objective' viewpoint but the two "road tests" are only 19 years apart, so I'd be relying on my memory! |
