SS 1LE > GT350
ZL1 > GT350R
ZL1 1LE = Ford GT

Discuss.
Id put it as

GT < SS < GT PP1 < GT PP2 < GT350 < SS 1LE < GT350R < ZL1 < ZL1 1LE

Im not interested in doing apples to oranges here so Im not including supercars or non v8 pony cars.

I’d wager to say that an SS with magnetic ride is probably a lot closer to the PP2 than people think. I’d certainly place it above a PP1 car.

Its crazy ford has come out with basically three mustangs, pp1, pp2, and gt350 and still can't catch the SS1LE. good for chevy, good for the alfa. mustang looks good and it comes in green!! hah

Comparing the numbers between the SS (non 1LE) and the new 2018 GT PP1 with the 10 speed automatic the GT PP1 wins in every category. Before the GT PP1 got the 10 speed auto the SS won in acceleration but the GT PP1 with its big sticky PS4 tires won in handling/braking. Now the GT PP1 wins in everything.

The SS is still pretty darn close to the GT PP1 in performance numbers. Not quite there though. Its certainly a lot closer to the GT PP1 than it is to a base GT. In the real world on the track it would be a drivers match between the two. Id wager that the SS would come out on top fairly often due to the superior alpha platform chassis and the relative lack of cooling problems on even the SS non-1LE.

Well, I'm seeing 1.01 average lateral Gs for the SS vs. 1.0 for the GT PP1.

The Mustang still has the 16g fuel tank, vs. 19g for the Camaro.

Braking 102 for the SS, 104 for the GT PP1.

38.4 turning circle for the SS, 40' for the GT PP1.

Of those numbers, the braking and lateral Gs are important. The GT PP1 is far from "winning" here. It's more like it's close. The manual SS was faster overall than the manual GT PP1 here, so it reasons that with similar automatic transmissions, they'll be similar, but far from "winning". With less weight and slightly better dynamics (handling and braking) the SS may still come out on top. A marginal power difference may not be enough to make any real difference.

The numbers I found were these for the SS not 1LE...

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.roa...-test-numbers/

And I pulled the numbers for the GT PP1 from the comparison from the GT PP1 vs SS 1LE. That test used the old manual only version of the GT PP1. I couldnt find acceleration numbers specific to the 10 speed equipped GT PP1. However its safe to assume they are at aleast as quick as the base GT with the new 10 speed. That combo easily beats the SS in a straight line.

I guess it depends on where you get you numbers from for this comparison. I think its safe to say they are both very close to each other when both are equipped with a manual transmission.

This is a pretty standard problem for Mustang GT owners to face. How much do they have upgrade their car to keep up with a bone stock base SS. Its nice of Ford to create these factory performance packages to do all the work for them.

It also depends on if you are only comparing straight line performance. When I think of performance, I think of the entire deal, not just straight line.

I agree. We had been discussing handling and braking as well. A big reason why I decided on buying an SS 1LE is because its so great at both handling and braking. In my opinion the least impressive characteristic of the SS 1LE is the straight line acceleration. Its good, but not supercar good like the handling and braking performance is. Not many supercars can even pull 1.12Gs on the skidpad and brake 60-0 in 93 ft. Those numbers are without even having true R compound tires like most of the supercars get tested with too. The ZL1 1LE pulls 1.18 Gs on the skidpad and brakes 60-0 in 91 feet wearing Goodyear Supercar 3R tires. The SS 1LE weighs about 100 pounds less and has slightly better weight distribution due to the lack of the supercharger and the extra plumbing/cooling equipment to go with that up front.

Id bet an SS 1LE could pull 1.2 Gs on the skidpad with some true R compound tires on it. Might even get down to 90 ft in 60-0 braking too.

Its crazy though, the SS is near the PP1, and the PP1 is a special package where the ss is just the base V8 package. If anything the fact that the camaro is still that close with its base setup just goes to show how good this chassis is.

I can tell you autoX wise i fear the 10speeds but i will still always own a manual.
