Strong December boosts Nissan’s record 2014 U.S. sales even higher
Quote:
Through November, Nissan North America had already posted a record year for U.S. sales.

Thanks to its best December, Nissan pushed its 2014 U.S. sales numbers into even higher territory, the Franklin-based automaker said Monday.

For the year, Nissan sold 1,386,895 vehicles in 2014, an all-time high and an 11.1 percent increase compared to 2013.

Nissan announced Monday it sold 117,318 units in December, up 6.9 percent compared to December 2013. That was Nissan's strongest December for U.S. sales on record, which includes both Nissan-branded and Infiniti-branded vehicles.

"Nissan had its all-time best year on the strength of our core vehicles – Altima, Sentra, Versa and Rogue, as well as Nissan Leaf, which had the best-ever year for any plug-in vehicle in the industry," Fred Diaz, Nissan senior vice present of U.S. Sales & Marketing and Operations, said in a news release. "We expect low gas prices and high consumer confidence to be the magic formula that continues to bring more buyers into dealer showrooms."

-American Honda sets new light truck sales mark for calendar year and December

-Acura Division has best annual sales since 2007, with best-ever month & year for trucks

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported record Honda Division sales of 1,373,029 vehicles for 2014 as overall vehicle sales reached 1,540,872 units, the second-best result in company history and an increase of 1.0 percent for the year. AHM light truck sales reached new monthly and annual records with December sales of 67,479 units, an increase of 6.2 percent, and total 2014 sales of 702,351 vehicles, up 1.5 percent.

Honda
The record Honda Division sales of 1,373,029 vehicles in 2014 was an increase of 1.0 percent versus 2013, led by a 2.0 percent increase in total car sales of 781,224 units. The Honda Division once again displayed considerable sales strength across both car and truck categories in 2014.

The award-winning Accord and the all-new Fit led the brand on the car side, while the new Honda CR-V re-asserted its leadership in the hottest segment in the industry, compact SUVs. Accord alone accounted for 388,374 sales in 2014, while CR-V captured 335,019 for the year, a new all-time annual record, and Civic again surpassed the 300,000-unit mark. The sub-compact Fit enjoyed its best December ever.

-CR-V shattered its previous December and annual milestones, rising 12.6 percent in December on sales of 32,369 units, and 10.2 percent YTD on sales of 335,019.

-The new Fit continued its hot streak, with 6,450 vehicles sold in December for an increase of 39.7 percent as total Fit sales reached 59,340 units in 2014, an increase of 10.9 percent.

-Accord posted an annual increase of 5.9 percent on sales of 388,374 vehicles in 2014 while over 325,000 Civics were sold in 2014. Adding CR-V's record haul of 335,019 vehicles pushed the total for these three vehicles comfortably over 1 million units.

-The Honda Pilot surged 28.0 percent in December on sales of 11,479 units in a fast-paced truck market.

"Despite the price of gasoline dropping well below $3 a gallon in many markets, Honda's strong, balanced lineup of cars and trucks helped us achieve record sales in 2014," said Jeff Conrad, Honda division senior vice president and general manager. "The great news is that we will build on this momentum with some great new products coming in 2015."

Combined sales of Hyundai, Kia in U.S. hit record high in 2014
Quote:
Hyundai Motor Group, the world's fifth-largest automaker, said Monday that its U.S. sales reached an all-time high in 2014 despite lingering worries over slowing global economic recovery and intensifying competition from Japanese rivals supported by the weak yen.

Hyundai Motor America (HMA) and Kia Motors America (KMA), the distribution and marketing arms of the group's flagship companies, said that they sold 725,718 cars and 580,234 vehicles last year, up 0.7 percent and 8.4 percent from a year earlier.

Their combined sales came to 1,305,952 units last year, exceeding the previous record set by the two leading Korean carmakers in 2012 when their sales totaled 1,260,606. This also marked the fourth straight year that the sales figures topped 1 million.

Hyundai Motor's sales in the U.S. were driven in part by the Santa Fe and Tucson sport utility vehicles whose sales jumped 21.5 percent and 13 percent to 107,906 and 47,306, respectively.

Kia Motors' annual sales in the U.S. also represented its largest ever. In particular, it sold 159,020 units of the Optima, known in Korea as the K5, last year, to make it its best-selling car in the U.S. for three straight years.

Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors, however, did not make headway in terms of market share. Kia Motors' market share edged up from 3.4 percent to 3.5 percent but Hyundai Motor saw its market share decline from 4.6 percent to 4.4 percent.

The sales figures came amid unfavorable market conditions including intensifying competition from Japanese rivals boosted by the weak yen and worries over the slowing global economic recovery.

Supported by the weak yen, sales of Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. reached annual highs. Nissan sold about 1.39 million cars last year in the U.S., up 11.1 percent from a year earlier, while Honda saw its sales grow 1 percent on-year to 1.37 million.

Volkswagen U.S. sales down 10% for 2014, eases up on 800,000 2018 sales goal and reassures dealers that growth is coming
Quote:
Volkswagen posted flat sales last month of 34,058, closing 2014 with sales of 366,970,

Back in 2009, the Volkswagen Auto Group (VAG) set out to achieve 800,000 Volkswagen passenger vehicle sales per year in the United States by 2018. Presented as a way to make VAG the largest in the world in terms of volume and profitability, the plan has yet to pan out; the brand sold 366,970 vehicles in the U.S. during 2014 — less half of the original 800,000 goal. In fact, sales of the Volkswagen brand were down 10 percent in the United States for calendar year 2014, making it difficult for some Volkswagen dealerships to stay in the black. But that should soon change.

During recent dealer meetings, VW executives delivered some welcome news to U.S. dealers, telling them to expect a slight increase in sales in 2015 along with bigger gains in 2017 as Volkswagen launches two new SUVs, an extremely-fast growing segment in which the brand has performed extremely poorly, to put it mildly.

Not only were dealers happy to hear that sales are expected to increase, but they were relieved to hear that the company is now refocusing on profitability of its dealer base in the United States, having “softened” the 800,000 sales by 2018 objective. In other words, the German automaker is sticking by its long-term sales goal of selling 800,000 Volkswagen-branded vehicles per year in the U.S., but it was apparent in its message that the objective is not a “make it or break it by 2018″ scenario. Instead, improving dealership profitability in the intermediate term is also part of the task at hand.

“It’s still on, they just softened the date,” Mike Sullivan, who owns two Los Angeles-area VW dealerships, said of VW’s 800,000-unit sales goal. “The point is if you get some of that logical, steady growth, it will develop. It doesn’t matter if it’s in ’17, ‘18 or ‘19. The point is growth and profits.”
The message was a welcome one, since a reported 25 to 30 percent of Volkswagen U.S. dealers struggle to stay profitable month to month.

According to dealers managers and owners, the brand has taken several steps to improve dealer profits, including a revamped dealer bonus structure and extended facility construction timelines. Other items that were hinted upon but have yet to be launched or discussed in detail include additional profit-focused initiatives that could come out this year.

At Volkswagen, meanwhile, higher December sales of its recently freshened Jetta compact sedan and the redesigned Golf lineup failed to make up for slumping sales of the Tiguan crossover and Passat midsize sedan, the brand’s second-best selling nameplate.

It's hard to believe how well Hyundai/Kia have done since they entered the US market. Besides getting that market share against the US manufacturers, they also did it against the Japanese manufacturers.

Both brands have stepped it way up in the last 8-10yrs. Both have very nice cars for the price.

Volvo Appoints New US Chief to Turn Car Sales Around, Brand down 8% in 2014
Quote:
STOCKHOLM – Swedish car manufacturer Volvo Cars announced the appointment Wednesday of a new chief executive for North America tasked with reviving the company's flagging U.S. sales.

Despite generally booming car sales in the United States -- helped by falling fuel prices -- sales of Volvo cars in the country dropped by 8% to 58,000 in 2014.

Lex Kerssemakers, a Dutch national with 16 years experience in the company, currently responsible for product strategy, will oversee the company's "U.S. Revival Plan" which targets annual sales of "over 100,000 cars in the medium term," the company said in a statement.

To do so, Volvo plans "a renewal of the entire product range by the end of 2017," it said.

"Volvo is not only in the U.S. to stay, it is in the U.S. to prosper".

"The U.S. is a key market for the development of the group and today we get back onto the front foot. Volvo is not only in the U.S. to stay, it is in the U.S. to prosper," Kerssemakers added.

He will also be responsible for opening up "the full potential of the Canadian and Latin American markets".

Volvo increased its sales by 9% last year to 465,866 cars worldwide on the back of soaring sales in China and strong European sales.

The iconic Swedish brand was sold by the US car maker Ford to China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group in 2010.

It has no manufacturing in the Americas and exports cars from its factories in Sweden, Belgium, and soon from China where it has three plants.

Kerssemakers replaces Volvo's interim U.S. chief executive Tony Nicolosi, appointed in 2013 to replace another American national who held the post for just over two years.
