I graduated HS in '86.

Yes the GN was THE car back then, almost a legend right from the start.

I wish I could go back in time with an A8 Hellcat just to see how people would have reacted back then...

It's all relative. The only time I've seen hellcats has been at car shows. Surprisingly, I never see them getting much attention...considering just how bad ass that car is. I guess for the average person, it's just another Challenger or Charger. I'm fascinated by them though.

The Grand National was out for a few years before it really became known. It was always black and beautiful, but really got know once they pumped a few 'roids into it and started smacking down pretty much anything back then.

Yep, the pre-86 hot-air GN's didn't get much attention, but when the intercooled cars came out in 86 thats when the interest started for me. The GNX and TTA helped push recognition a bit in later years.

My comment about the Hellcat had more to do with who thought back in 1987 that there would ever be a showroom stock Dodge with double the power of a GNX for virtually less cost in today's money? Not to mention a top speed 25mph faster than a Lamborghini Countach.

add to that... who would have thought a Camaro V6 would make 335 HP in 2016!

Your right about pre 86 the GN not getting attention. Turbo and V6 didn't inspire confidence in a world accustom to V8 power. My first new car was a 84 Monte SS and at that time the GN wasn't a big deal. After the intercooler arrived in 86, it was the hottest car. 87 was all about the GN (and U2 Joshua Tree)

My '68 ran 10's, but NOT a stock engine -- was street legal.

Fun days then and now!

Even in the good old days of the late 60s a Road Runner could only do in the low 13's in the 1/4 mile and that was one of the fastest stock cars on the road. I had one of the last really high horsepower muscle cars, a 1970 Chevelle SS 396 with cowl induction. It put out 375 hp and was only capable of ~14 second 1/4 mile at about 100 mph. These engines were capable of a lot more, but the chassis and drive train let them down. Then in 1971, new pollution rules kicked in and the insurance companies took aim at the muscle cars and that was all she wrote. At least for 20 years or so. Lots of cars blow these times out of the water in 2015 AND get great gas mileage and have lots of amenities. The 1968 road runner didn't even come with an AM radio.

Here's a listing of 1/4 mile times for most cars tested in magazines in 1970:
