Hey Roader, It still is that price in my area. Cam kit $700, Install $1,200, tune $600, total $2,500. The OP was getting bad advice from his shop saying they needed to drop the engine... that's where things get out of hand. Plus he has headers in his estimate too.

With all the step by step info out there on how to do the swap yourself on an LS going as far back as when the C5 was introduced, anyone that is willing to give it a try can easily do the work themselves though. A cam swap is definitely the best bang for the buck in terms of performance upgrades.

I was contacted by another shop last night. The guy was very helpful and I believe I will end up taking my car there, even though he's over an hour away.

He kind of caught me at a bad time, and I didn't have a chance to write down what he told me, but his estimate for parts and labor was approx. $4400, which included stainless works headers and off-road pipes. The labor portion he estimated at roughly $1600, but I didn't clarify if those prices included a dyno tune, which runs $550. I'm fairly certain it did, though. The tuning price is pretty high, but I think they do that in-house whereas the other local shops would require me to take it elsewhere to get tuned, so the extra cost is well worth it IMHO.

I will still need to speak with him again to find out all the specifics before I pull the trigger.

I want to thank everyone who has posted here and tried to help me out. I've been on internet forums for nearly 20 years, and I think you guys are the most mature and helpful people Ive dealt with on a forum.

Great news! Glad you found a shop with a more reasonable labor quote. And a total cost of $4,400 isnt bad considering the parts you've talked about:

1. BTR cam kit plus crank bolt, gaskets, plugs - $800
2. Stainless Works headers - $1400 (these are some expensive headers and if you are looking to save some money, there are other options out there)
3. Tune - $550 great deal
4. Labor - $1600 (that is about 12 hours of labor... seems a little high by a couple hours even with contingency built in but it's not crazy like the other shop)
5. That leaves $50 for misc shop supplies and coolant... sounds about right!

Make sure to keep up posted how it all turns out. You're gonna love it!!!

Just stay out of the General Discussion section.

Oh and good luck with your upgrades, that doesn't sound like too bad of an estimate including headers and tune. You may want to post up the name of the shop to see if anyone else has experience with them.

Ahh yes, I am pretty sure I've seen that one, not much though, twice at most. Looks nice, looks like a dedicated track car. Mine is street/strip and just about the loudest car on the road
