LS3 is like the ???
My wife asked me what the LS3 in my Camaro was comparible to, as in 327, 350, 383, 396, 409, 427... You get the jist. My neighbor has a BB 400 in his '67 Firebird. I couldn't really give her a straight answer looking at past engines and years.
So with that said, what do you believe it is equal to?

Technically true pontiac engines were neither small or big block. Like the lsx series, their external dimensions were the same. I believe the cranks had either small or large journals. If you are referring to a 396 chevy that gained 4ci to become 400 then I apologize for inserting trivia into the thread.

There is no comparison. The LS3 is 376Ci but it makes a lot more power and torque then any 60's small block, hell even big block. If those old engines had to go by today's power ratings, they would all be showing a lot less power and torque then their advertised numbers from back in the day.
In order of "best" to "worst" the LSx series would look like this (in terms of most HP to LEAST HP, excluding the truck variants): LS9, LSA, LS7, LS3, LS6, LS2, LS1 The LS1 was the "new gen" 350 at only 346ci and since the LS3 is the "baseline" LS motor for every GM performance car, that would make the LS3 the new "350 of today". It's not directly comparable unfortunately but that's how it is.

i wouldnt say the ol 60's motors are not comparable . my old man is a sbc guy and those things can pump out some numbers. hes got a lil 64 nova with a 383 that will abliterate some nice 12" tires.
but the ls series is just more envirment friendly and 21 century friendly. tuning is easier vs having to do it by a screw driver changing jets , springs, rods. and all that in a carb.

I excluded the LS4 on purpose because it is for FWD only applications, but you are right.
Put the LS4 at the end of the spectrum for 'least' HP, to the right of the LS1.

I'm not hating on small blocks nor am i saying they're not capable. I've been building/rocking small blocks my whole life..but you cant compare the 23* sbc to a 15* LSx, im sorry, but stock for stock, the LSx outclasses ANY factory made sbc in every way (HP, TQ, MPG, Efficiency, etc). Built SBC vs Built LSx is a whole other topic..let's try NOT to go there

You might wanna take 454 101... The LS6 is a 454 correct rated @ 450hp the LS5 rated 2 390hp, and LS4 rated @ 275hp the LS7 rated @ 465hp....
