Clutch Resistance (2LT)

What is it that gives the clutch pedal it's spring-loaded feel? Is it the springs in the clutch itself, or is it a spring on the pedal? I ask because the feel of the clutch on my car is horrible. Even after driving it for 9 months now, I still stall it regularly. The clutch lets out easily, then suddenly right about the time it catches, lets out really firmly. Every other stick I've owned, had a continuous feel throughout the whole stroke of the clutch pedal. The pedal in my camaro seems to be design to make you stall the car. You either have to gun it and drop it, or let it out super slow and have a very slow take off. There's no middle of the road, you can't just do a normal speed takeoff. Makes me miss my RX-8 in a big way. But back to the point. If the issue is the spring in the pedal, I can theoretically swap it out for something with a more accurate feel, right?

Are you talking about the 2SS or the 2LT you drive?

nothing is wrong with your clutch. I believe there are springs in the clutch pedal that make it ''bounce'' back. There are threads on here explaining how to remove it. But I can't imagine why in 9 months you can't get used to it. I drive an SS so I don't see how a V6 would be any harder than mine

I am used to it. But its like if someone trips you every time you start walking, you're still going to fall alot, no matter how used to it you are. Its just a horrible clutch for regular driving. Its good if you want to spin your tires every time you move but, I don't.

The pressure plate has the springs that push back against the throwout bearing hydraulic pressure. The clutch pedal also has a spring that helps it return to the up position.

I feel ya, I'm debating taking out the spring on the pedal inside the car...however I'm afraid it won't spring all the way up and cause my clutch to wear or some "murphy's law" catastrophe... I hate the way the spring on the pedal rockets it at you right as the clutch disengages...

mine does the same thing. I think it is a bad design and GM needs to figure out how to get it fixed

The pressure plate has "springs" that fly out and help engage the clutch with more pressure.

So the pedal feels "lighter" at the bottom and gets heavier as you engage the clutch against the fly wheel. Some after market clutches actually put sliding weights on the springs to help them fly open when spinning with the fly wheel.

So, once the pressure plate and clutch begin to spin with the fly wheel the springs fly open due to the centifugal force and it makes the pedal jump back when releasing the pedal.

It is completely normal in higher power cars to prevent slipage.

hope that helps.

The problem is the line between 'lighter' and 'heavier' is razor thin. I think my old acura TL had about as much torque as a camaro, and its clutch was very consistent and normal, like every other car i've driven. Every single other thing about that TL sucked ass, but the feel of the clutch was good .

Agreed. I think the V6 cars could probably have a smoother clutch and get away with it fine. Maybe the v6 inherets some of the SS personality... It is a camaro afterall..

Pull the rockover center spring out of the pedal. I did mine 6 months ago and like it a lot better. If you don't like it you can always put it back.
