That's kind of how I would understand it. Obviously, if you do a cam, you're doing valve-springs at a minimum, and probably a few other valve-train related components if you're wise. I have GPIs pushrods, timing gear/chain, and Smith Bros. bushed trunions for peace of mind.

My real point, when I say cam only, is that the heads are completely stock, and have never even been off the car. Untouched, and a factory full thickness head gasket.

I dunno, but for me, when I see "cam only" I think of just a cam and that's it. If you have supporting mods to go along with it, then for me it should read as FBO and cam. That makes more sense to me. Just saying! Hehe

Cam only is and has been always CAM with stock heads and SBE with supporting mods. You have to have supporting mods to utilize the cam (stock intake is junk for most cams, stock exhaust is going to fight a cam, you need gear etc etc). Your not going to leave you stock valve springs and do cam only are you?

If you can get dyno runs (baseline & after-mods) in approximately the same air quality.....the dyno is good for measuring the effect the mod(s) have on power (increase/decrease/etc).

Then, of course, there's the tuning benefit to get the car running fast/correctly.

Otherwise.....the dyno is just a toy for shits and grins.....and BS braggin' rights.

Exactly! So often somebody will post "I made xxx" like they made some incredible number, or will say "I only made xxx" like they were expecting more.

The point is - unless you have the same dyno, with the same car, same conditions, comparing dyno numbers is fairly pointless. It's just a tuning tool. It is, however, great fun to watch, and even more fun to do yourself!

I dyno my 1LE in 3 totally different environments and the numbers where with in a few horsepower lol I got lucky I guess. Diabold motorsports we tuned my car on his in January. I swapped injectors and stuck it on the dyno at excessive motorsports in April. Then at a car shown in July. All with in single digit numbers difference.

For me, I ususally use dynojet SAE to compare dyno numbers, most dynojets are pretty close. My 1LE made 484hp and 444tq SAE and it is quick, well I think it is. I need to take it to the track with some good rear tires and see what it does. In the end its only a number but if your dyno numbers are way off it would be a concern. We all here have seen so many freakin dyno charts that we know what these things do with certain mods, for me the dyno was just for tuning and verification it was working correctly. I knew what it was going to lay down and I was within 4 hp of what I thought.
