3rd track day in 1LE: Waterford Hills

I received a last minute invite to instruct at the Roush Owners track event put on by Roush here in the Detroit area to coincide with the Woodward Dream Cruise. I/we are fortunate to have a smaller (1.5mile) road course within about 25 minutes of my house. Waterford Hills is a very technical road course with very little room for error or passing and multiple track surface that one must contend with. As they say, if you can drive Waterford, you can drive anywhere!

Specs
:
  • 2013 1LE Mods: Driver, SLP Blackwing elbow, drop in filter, Pedders springs, Motul 600 (stock tires, pads, rotors, sway bars, bushings, gearing, weight etc.)
  • -1.6 front camber, -1.3 rear camber (aligned @ Rodgers Chevrolet)
Highlights:
  • Best lap: 1:21 flat...tons of 21.x and 22.x to back it
  • I was tied as the fastest car of the day with a 640RWP, Corvette ZR1 on Cup tires driven by an acquaintance. He didn't have a lap timer but he couldn't get away over about 7 laps until we hit traffic and the Mustang he passed spun in front of me :(
  • This was a Roush day so there were 40+ Mustangs, Stage 2 and Stage 3 (supercharged, suspension, etc) the aforementioned ZR1 and another 605WHP ZR1, a Katech built Z06 (I am acquaintances/friends with the vette guys) an a 80s 911 and a couple Focus.
Favorite comment of the day during tech:
  • I was inline to tech and had a small gathering around the car...I mentioned I had hoped to see some 1:19s out of the car and was met with a disbelieving "That is faster that Scott!". Scott is a nice guy and a Roush Engineer that apparently was the fastest guy in this group with an 4.6L Supercharged Mustang, roll bar, race wing ect.......He was quick, but he had to let me by ......But then, I still didn't run the 19s or even 20s I was hoping for so we can call that a wash! :(
Car:
  • Waterford Hills being short with quick left right transitions showcased how unsupportive the stock SS non-leather seats can be. (Yes harness would help, but for me no rollbar = no harness) If you plan to track your 2014+ order the Recaros!!!!!
  • Rear wheel breaking loose under power on right turn, 2nd gear corner exit (diff opening?) I experienced this again at Waterford. I spoke with an acquaintance Saturday and I am waiting for a response with some direction at this time.
Pedders Springs
  • This is not an A-B comparison as I never had the 1LE stock on Waterford Hills....(That will be in two weeks at Grattan). I am pretty certain that the Pedders spring rate is pretty darn close to the stock rates as the car had the similar if not the same handling characteristics as when it was stock. I cant say it was any better or any worse at this point. We will see in two weeks.
Video to come at a later time.....It is pretty boring as I was out front and there wasn't much traffic to pass in the only session I recorded

Yes, much more fun in a smaller light weight car....Top speed recorded was about 104MPH but I hit the limiter which I thought was suppose to be about 108MPH in 3rd???

For reference my prepped Integra Type R ran 1:19s here, My Civic race car: 1:18s, My NASA prepped Evo ran high 1:14s and consistent 1:15s (382whp, 275 race tires, 3400lbs w/driver) <All Race tires, coilovers, lightened/gutted ect. 1LE = street car

From FastestLaps.com: Some older cars times and no idea if they are modded or on race tires.

I couldn't agree more about the Recaros or that Waterford is a technical track! I was there for Camaro Superfest (driving much slower) and I could tell it was a lot of fun but as you stated little to no room for error. Glad you are enjoying your car. Hopefully I can join you next year at some track events (my budget is shot for this year).

Nice job, tied for fastest of the day with a modded ZR1 no less!

Interesting that the spring rates feel about the same as stock. Any issues with jounce with the reduced suspension travel?

Curious on your thoughts on why you chose your alignment specs? I went with -2.0 deg front camber, -1.1 deg rear. I realize tires may wear out more quickly, but I'm tracking a couple of times a month for the next couple of months, so I went aggressive camber.

Looking forward to your return to Grattan.

Good times!

Wow!! nice that we can hang with cars having lots more power on a short track. Although I'm not really surprised because power means less and handling means everything in those conditions. Way to go! Oh and are you still 100% stock? Maybe need to change your sig if you now have the SLP, Pedders springs, etc?

No issues with Jounce or the reduced travel. However my 9 year old just told me a few minutes ago that the ride in te Camaro has gotten bouncier. .

Alignment was for two reason. I had -1.3 pre Pedders and I don't fully understand the black art of suspension but with a reduced travel I thought I could use a tad more up front. So -1.6 was picked.

The rear was not by choice. I wanted -1.0 but the best we could get without camber bolts was -1.3/.4 on the left rear, so I went with that. No other reason. I do have bolts now sitting on my work bench but u am undecided what direction to go and I am leaving it for at least 2 more weeks.

Thank you Matt for this great bullet point review. You have a great way to get to the fun facts. I have a few points I wanna bring to the table regarding your comment about ''Rear wheel breaking loose under power on right turn, 2nd gear corner exit'' but im too tired to do so...going to bed. Tomorrow. Great picture and your car looks f.....g mean machine. Cant wait to see the video...you dont need to be passing cars for it to be good. Its the speed and grace I look for to see.
Mike.
