For the most part I think police officers are decent, honest, hardworking people. But like the rest of the population, there are a few here and there that are total jerks. My husband met one of those the other day in our old SIM V6. Was in Atlanta on the freeway and following behind an 18 wheeler. He was purposely following kind of far behind to avoid any rocks being slung up on the car. He didn't know what exact speed he was going but knew he was very close to the speed limit when he saw the lights in his rear view. Pulled over and was given a ticket by a very rude city police officer for........64 in a 60. I say that cop wanted a new Camaro but his wife told him no so now he's pissed at anyone who has one. :P

You are Absolutely correct! Not from the authority standpoint, but the technology, training in order to use LIDAR and the accuracy. I have NEVER in 15 years heard of a LIDAR thrown out on a technicality.

My only suggestion? Get a really good radar detector..Valentine/Escort or Passport.

I will answer ANY questions you guys have about anything regarding tickets, fighting them, how to approach an officer..ANYTHING!

I can get you out of a ticket most times IF you are 100% honest with me regarding what you were doing and your attitude.

I believe if you tried on your own to research your avenues or options, you could get out of it on your own, but will give you very good advice.

#1...even if you "think/believe" you didn't do anything, be POLITE, courteous and DO NOT make the officer wait for your credentials. Especially true in the rain.

2. Make NO excuses!

3. Do not admit ANYTHING! I mean ANYTHING. Play stupid unless you were obviously doing 60 in a 30...then see #4.

4. If you got pants down busted as in a certain something the parents shouldn't see... Be humble and HONEST! NOT Apologetic, defensive or use ANY EXCUSE!

I hate excuses..I have been around the block, a mechanic, fast driver, was a kid once, have had emergencies, etc. I can pick apart your bullshit faster than you can spew it, not because I am cynical, it's my job. Your body language, eye movement, responses to my questions are all indicative signs.

Hey...Just be cool...like Fonzie. We know what time it is. You will go farther with me being honest than giving me BS.

When an offender is going faster than that low pitched tone of all other traffic, the radar emits a higher pitched tone. Visual is obtained and based on visual, the offender's vehicle speed is locked after observation.

Now visual acuity and speed is easy. I live on a 25 mph road. I can tell you within +/- 2 mph how fast a vehicle is traveling 95% of the time.

Fastest vehicle I have caught was a Chevy Cobalt SS..128 in a 55, stationary. Took me 3 miles to get him, 4 seperate choices of freeways after I clocked him and was luck. The plate came back to a city south and I took the freeway I thought he would take..

And he tried to fight it...Yea, right.

BTW, I am VERY liberal with tickets..I know how I drive and am not a hypocrite. We all are required to have insurance, registration, plates and drive safe. I don't have a ticket quota, so I take care of the real crappy drivers that may at some point cause you an accident. Just ask DDustin here on this board. He got in an accident in my precinct in Detroit with his 2SS with 500 miles on her. Idiot hit him and didn't have insurance.

So if at some point somebody here gets a ticket, one of 4 things are true. Either you did it and the cop is nice, you did it and the cop is a dick, you didn't do it and the cop has a quota or the cop is a dick and has a quota. Not all of us are sanctamonious pricks. I am just like you.

Off my soapbox..sorry for the ramblings.
we need more cops like you here in jersy would save the state a whole lot of money ....

This is radar...see the two cylinders? one mounts in front, one in rear..dash and rear deck. I will take a few pics of my car tonight and show how set up.
The radar displayed here is a Decatur Genesis II Select which will clock vehicles approaching with front antenna or going away with the rear antenna while the patrol car is moving. This unit will also clock from a stationary position using either antenna. In Pa only State Troopers are allowed by law to use Radar and most of those I saw were hand held stationary units. There are several other brands of radar such a Kustom Signal, MPH, and Stalker that have the same capability as the newer Decatur Genesis II Select which I last used before I retired. These newer Radars have the capability of clocking vehicles in the moving mode going the same direction as the Police car. The Officer can be following a vehicle and obtain a clock or can clock a vehicle coming up from the rear. The current Lidar/Laser (LIght Detection And Ranging) are all stationary but very effective in picking out a vehicle in heavy traffic. VASCAR is very effective tool and can be used while moving or stationary. The VASCAR is passive (won't trip radar/Lidar detectors) and works off of distance divided by time. At highway speeds its recommended to use at least 1/8 mile (660 FT) or a 6 second minimum clock. The newer Radars and Lidar units can also be used in a passive mode with a known distance where the operator times the vehicle between two points to obtain the vehicles average speed. In my area all of these methods are used in conjunction to Aircraft and pacing where an Officer will follow a vehicle and match the patrol car speed (certified speedometer) to the vehicle being followed. All of these methods are effective but each has its own advantage and disadvantage usually associated with cost and training. The most common problem I encountered with violators was that they really didn't know when or where they had been clocked. The Officer may have clocked the vehicle before the driver ever saw the Officer or Patrol Car. One significant problem for the Officer is to make sure he is stopping the car he clocked. In heavy traffic and at night this can be a problem but If I was never sure I had the right car I wouldn't even stop it. There is always next time for the Officer and my integrity was worth more to me than anything else. Most newer vehicles have speed sensors which has improved the reliability of the cars speedometers. If you change the size of tires from 205/70R15 to 255/70R15 this can effect the reading by several miles per hour. The diameter of the 255 series tires are greater and the tire is making less revolutions per given distance. The faster you drive the greater the error of the speedometer. The same problem can occur if you change transmissions and don't verify the speed sensor or gear is correct. Unfortunately for motorist its not the Officers responsibility to figure out why your speedometer doesn't match what he clocked you at. A lot of times I could tell there was a problem and tried to help the motorist understand what the problem was so they wouldn't get stopped again. Unfortunately an Officers can't always tell if there is a problem or have time to help the motorist. I tried to treat every motorist the same and my in-car video tapes would reflect this however the way a Driver acted could also effect whether they got a warning or a citation. Being a Police Officer always involves conflicts and some Officers are better at resolving conflicts better than others.

Not any more than your Garmin, Tom-Tom or heaven forbid, your radar detector or Pine tree air freshener hanging from the rear view mirror.

What if there are mistakes on the ticket? I got one for 91 in a 75, both kids and wife in the car. I was behind a car in the left lane going with traffic. The car I was behind got over and there was CSP in the median right there. Out of reaction I tapped the breaks, looked down and I was in the upper 70's. The officer stated I was doing 91. I didn't argue but asked him "are you serious?" thinking . He came back with the ticket and then started asking me if my car was a 1SS or 2SS and how I liked it. I was so irritated but complied and answered his questions. Looking at the ticket I noticed he put the color of my car as Red when it's acually Inferno Orange (it was a BRIGHT sunny day and the car was clean since I was heading to a Camaro meet). Looking at the ticket further he put my Race as White, which I'm Black. Are these enough flaw's to get it dropped? I have court on Monday. Oh and I haven't had a ticket in 5 1/2 years.

Cops have been very leanient with me ever since i got my Casmaro, really odd. Ive gotten pulled over for doin the exact speed limit in my brothers stang for a check to see if it was stolen. Followed in the ford Fusion. Stopped on my driveway. In my frineds Mazda 3. Numerous occasions. But i have been speeding in front of Cops, like right in front of them, and they dont even look at me. Each time i have sped in this car, whether it was to overtake a car going 50 in a 60, or a dumptruck with all rocks falling off of it, i always pass a cop going 15 or 20 over the speed limit and they never do anything. Teaches me a good lesson but i rarely ever speed, only if i need to overtake a car for stupidity. Must say i like this.
Good story. Give my upmost repect to police officers, also because im on my path to becoming one .
But there are some real rough ones out there. I just hope none of us have contact with those ones

Simple things like color will not result in default. License number charge and location.

You should make a court date and hope he doesn't show. If he does, challenge the calibration, position, traffic amount, time of day...etc.

Okay so color of vehicle has no bearing. But what about the race? The way I see it is if I was a suspect for something based on the information this cop had written, they would be looking for a White guy in a Red Camaro... I'm a Black guy in an Orange Camaro. How could that hold up? I'm just trying to understand this...

totally off topic sort of...

I agree that most cops are good people. It is the bad experiences we have all had with the not so decent ones that stereotype "all" cops together. I have had my share of run ins and I will say I got off A LOT more times for bad shit being nice and respecting the cop then the few times when I was young and dumd and smarted off...

For example, last August i had just got my IROC. It was late (3am) and my wife had to work late so I took her to work. As I said it was late, the car was new (to me) and I started to play a little. Turned down this Industrial Raod and hit it. Now a stock 89 IROC, hitting it isnt much but it will break the 35 mph speed limit. I am "hauling" about 60 in a 35 and I see head lights WAYYY back... first thought, no way, not on this road, so I get to the red light, its red but I am going right so i zip around, no stop, get a little squirley and hit it again. HMMM those head lights are MUCH closee now! POW, there goes the blue and reds... damn! Well cop walks up to the car... I had the engine off, the interior lights on and all my paperwork ready. i was polite, explained that it was new and I was playing around a bit. Gave my stuff back and told me to have a nice night... no ticket for speeding or running the red light.

Just be nice... doesn't always work but i can tell you being a a$$hole to the cop NEVER works!
